Internships that consulting firms like
Hey guys,
I'm an incoming junior at a semi target (Big 10 School with nationally ranked economics, business, engineering, etc...). I'm studying economics, having transferred out of engineering after freshman year. I still plan on taking 3 more astrophysics/physics courses for the minor in astrophysics, and am doing a history minor out of personal interest and to inflate GPA a little. My GPA is a 2.6 right now, due to a combination of hard courses and me slacking off really badly. I got C grades in the intermediate econ courses, and a B- in an upper division financial economics course, due to me slacking off even more sophomore year. I'm retaking the intermediate econ courses this summer, and plan on acing them. That will put my major GPA above 3.5, while leaving my cumulative GPA at around a 2.8-9, coming into fall recruiting for junior year internships. I plan on acing or coming close to acing most of my remaining college courses, since I've kind of finally settled on what I want to do in life. I have good extracurriculars, including leadership position at a volunteer tax assistance program, unpaid winter/spring accounting/finance internship at a nonprofit, and membership on the finance team for an university engineering association
My career goals are in Management/Strategy Consulting, and I intend on networking with MBB, Deloitte, Accenture, and other consulting firms in the area. I also am interested in F500 corporate finance or tech consulting as back up options.
By spring semester, my GPA will be above 3.0, which will qualify me for a lot more internships by avoiding the cut off. However, a lot of relevant, if not most corporate internships will be done with recruiting by then(as far as my knowledge goes). What kind of internships should I aim for, given my interest in consulting. Does brand name matter when interning? Any tips for networking with upper level consulting firms? I am confident my GPA can be a cumulative 3.3-3.4 and a major 3.7 come senior year fall recruiting(which is when I assume consulting recruiting goes down)
