Following up after interview - how soon is too soon?
Apologies if I'm just over-thinking this, but I interviewed with a PE firm last week and they said they'd get back to me this week, letting me know either way. Haven't heard anything yet and was wondering if it's appropriate to reach out even though the week still isn't quite over yet.
Thanks.
how soon should i follow up after an interview
At the end of your interview thank the interviewer for their time and ask when to expect a call/email about their decisions. You can reach out about a week after the follow-up date if you haven't heard anything. This ensures that you aren't pestering them but are still in the know.
If you did not receive any follow-up date then wait about 2 or 3 weeks after your interview to reach out.

I always did when I was interviewing is ask them when I expect to hear back (a specific day, even if this is "end of next week), then inevitably they wouldn't follow up (not intentionally usually), and I'd have set my calendar to follow up exactly 1 week after their deadline.

NO.
the week is not over, they said this week. personally, I'd wait until Thursday to email or call them. NEVER EVER EVER follow up before the deadline, always add on a few days of extra cushion. I know it's nerve racking, but this will help you learn more patience.
Thanks for the input. Had a feeling it'd come off as annoying.
Yeah it's driving me crazy especially since this firm is my top choice and I'm beginning other interview processes right now and really hoping to avoid going through that again.
it's part of the game. one thing I always did when I was interviewing is ask them when I expect to hear back (a specific day, even if this is "end of next week), then inevitably they wouldn't follow up (not intentionally usually), and I'd have set my calendar to follow up exactly 1 week after their deadline. I chose this arbitrarily but I think it's close enough so that it's fresh in their minds but far away enough that you won't be seen as pestering them.
I agree I would wait until Monday to follow up
Very rarely have I ever heard anything by the "hear back" date, doesnt really mean anything. Follow up on Tuesday at the earliest.
Do I follow up? (Originally Posted: 10/18/2017)
So I completed an initial round for a hedge fund last week and was told I would hear back within a week. Its been 8 days now and I am tempted to email the HR rep asking her when I will hear back.
Is this appropriate? How long should I realistically wait until I follow up? Thanks guys.
Yeah seems reasonable to followup with HR
Interview Follow-up - No feedback since interview (Originally Posted: 04/08/2011)
Hello,
About 8 days ago I had an interview with a west coast firm for an ER position. I think the interview went pretty well, but I havent gotten any feedback since the interview.
A couple of questions:
Is it customary for firms to send a rejection notice either by phone/email/post?
How long should I wait before following up with the interviewers? I've already sent a thank you note.
Thanks for any advice. Just wondering what the most effective steps should be since there is no HR contact involved....
cheers.
Contact the person you interviewed with on Monday to verify the present standing. Sounds like they are waiting to hear back from another candidate.
It varies greatly. Some firms never reply. Some take a long time to move candidates through the process. And other times, the person you would interview with next could be too busy to select second round candidates. You never know.
Call or email your contact. It is reasonable and customary to ask for a timeline.
I interviewed with a firm 2k miles from where I am based. They flew me in and put me through the paces for an entire day: case study, model, presentation and interviewed with 6 or 7 people. It went so well that 3 partners took me to dinner that night. Then, no reply. No one even responded to my inquiries. When I received an offer from them 4 weeks later, I declined because they were so unprofessional.
If you don't hear back about a timeline for the hiring process, you might find this is not the place for you.
Boutique Interview - Following Up (Originally Posted: 08/30/2012)
I interviewed for a small boutique bank on August 16, 2012 with two analysts and an associate after a phone interview a week before. I thought I had done really well with the interviews, and had great conversations with all three people. The two analysts told me that they would get back to me by the end of the next week, August 24. They told me to contact them and not the human resources manager regarding my application.
Following the interview, I sent thank you emails to the two analysts and the associate. I only received a response from the associate.
I waited until August 27, and still have not heard anything from the boutique bank so I decided to send a follow up email in the morning to one of the analysts. I did not receive a response from the analyst, so I decided to email the other analyst the next morning on August 28. I have not received a response from either of the analysts and am contemplating on whether I should email the associate or just keeping waiting.
Please note that I have read almost every single thread about following up after interviews, but I am quite clueless on what my action should be.
Thanks in advance for your comments and advice.
Call them up
Hi Phanster,
It can be frustrating in a situation like this (I have been there). Is this the only job you are looking at? the reason I ask is that to wait or follow up depends on your situation. I understand when you have to follow up with the HR for interviews and appointment dates. Normally, my experience has been that HR in bulge bracket banks take time to get back and need follow ups. I would state that such a behavior is unprofessional but one has got to live with it as you are at the receiving end at that point. With a boutique firm, given that the interviewers agreed to get back, I dont see a reason for them not acknowledging your e-mail. Since none of the analysts responded to your first and second attempts, may be you should write to the associate and check on the status. Personally, I think this is unprofessional on their part. It takes 2 minutes to write a reply... what ever the result is..
Do you think its better to email or when should I wait to give them a call? Do I call the analysts, or should I call the HR?
Call whoever can be reached. Clearly the analysts couldnt be bothered. I mean, interviewers make decision within minutes, given that you had your interview already, regardless of the way you contact them will not affect the status of outcome. You might as well try everything to get hold them and receive a peace of mind.
Still haven't received a response from anyone. I called the analysts, associates, and HR today - left a voice mail for one of the analysts. Anyone have any ideas?
Interview Follow-Up: Good or Bad? (Originally Posted: 11/02/2010)
Had two MM consulting firms in mid October. Towards the end of the interviews one said - "our "red-carpet" day is early to middle Nov. and the other said "i'll be traveling for about 5 weeks but will let you know and here's my card...". So, whether good or bad, I emailed both today (couldn't stand the wait) and just touched base with them and asked if there was anything else on my end etc.. Good or bad?
prob won't affect you at all, don't worry
Interview follow up overkill (Originally Posted: 06/20/2012)
Finished last round interview three weeks ago at top IBD for analyst position. I sent thank you emails the day after. A week after I sent an email to the hiring manager reiterating my interest in the position and a note to the HR person asking for the status of my application. HR person said they really liked me and would get back to me shortly. Last friday I sent an email to HR reiterating my interest in the position and today asked the hiring manager for a update. They initially said they'd get back to me in a few days. Is this overkill? Some say once a week is good, and some don't. Also, the emails are going to different people, but I imagine they talk.
yes, overkill, stop.
probably wouldn't have sent the second email
DING
second one makes you look desperate

Interview Follow Up - Investment firm in Chicago (Originally Posted: 04/14/2008)
I am curious what the general consensus (professionals and students alike) is on how long to wait to follow up post interview.
I interviewed at an investment firm in Chicago on March 24th (3 weeks ago).
I sent a thank you letter that same day to the two individuals who I interviewed with.
I was told there would be about a 2 week timeframe to hear something, so I followed up on April 9 and received back the following -
"Thanks for the note. I did receive the thank you note, thanks. An FYI, we are still in the process of candidate selection for the portfolio administration internship. I hope to have a better idea of the process by the end of this week."
Now my question is how long should I wait to follow up again? Would this week be too soon? I do not want to pester the recruiter but I am highly interested in the internship and have another offer on the table now, but I would prefer this internship.
Thanks for the advice.
Mike
I usually do day of and just say "it was a pleasure speaking with you etc. etc." then later if you need anything, they will be glad to hit you back
Does this company (the investment firm in Chicago) know that you have another offer right now?
i know a friend who applied for an analyst position at a consulting firm, was told he'd have an answer several times and eventually did not hear anything... why cant HR have the decency to shoot an email at least. he didnt care though because he accepted another offer.
If they said that they'd have a better idea by the end of last week I think it would be more than reasonable to follow up this week.
Follow up with MD after 1 month? Interview w/ another firm? (Originally Posted: 03/24/2010)
So this is a follow up on a forum post I had earlier:
http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/urgent-md-asked-for-my-resume-cov…
The MD never got back to me, and I followed up 1-2 wks again after I sent him my application. Granted he said he's traveling, so I assumed he was busy, but it's now about a month since he sent his email and I'd like to follow up again. But the email wouldn't be any different from my first follow up email - asking whether or not he has heard from the recruiter.
In the mean time, I have another interview with a diff firm and diff location coming up. Would this provide good material to add to my follow up email to him? How can I use it to my advantage when it's only an interview and not an offer? Can I ask him for his advice, while following up on the recruiter he knows?
Thanks!
no...I wouldn't do it.
Definitely do not say, "I am also interviewing..." it will not impress anyone. He doesn't care.
You should follow up with him by forwarding your prior email(s) and say that you're just checking-in / wanted to make sure he received your prior email(s).
If you live in the same city, invite the MD to meet over coffee or lunch. If you're not in the area, can you make a trip to go see friends that live in that city? ...and leave on Thurs. night, so you can meet him on Friday.
The end result of your follow up email is to not seem like you're being a pest (even though you really are, it's called persistence) and offer to setup a time to meet or have a phone call to discuss his area of expertise.
Interview follow up? - Randomly had a S&T phone interview (Originally Posted: 05/13/2010)
I randomly had a BB S&T phone interview (Didn't get to 2nd round) back in March. Would it be weird to follow up with the interviewer (I have his name, but no email). I landed a pretty good internship this summer and I thought it might be a networking opp? Anyone done this?
Don't do it. It would be weird. You did not make it to the second round, so it means you did not make a connection with him. Since he is not one of your contacts, I guarantee that he does not remember interviewing you.
Agree. It would be extremely weird.
Interview Follow Ups (Originally Posted: 10/04/2010)
Anyone have experience receiving responses to email thank you / follow ups after interviews? Many of my interviewers have responded with a brief little note (mainly saying it was nice to talk to me and to call / email if I have any other questions) after I sent them a thank you message, which mildly surprised me. Should I read into this as a good sign (i.e. offer soon to arrive) or are interviewers sort of expected by HR to do this as protocol?
Any analysts, associates, etc. who've interviewed applicants...would love to hear from you. Thanks.
In my experience, receiving a brief note from an interviewer is generally a good sign. That is not to say that you are guaranteed an offer (or even a trip to the next round), but most people will tend not to send a note in response to a follow-up if they don't like you.
If you got a response from an interviewer that is a good sign. Then hopefully the MD will call you an hour or two later...
Yea it was final round interviews and the emails were from a mix of mds, vps, and associates. One told me that HR would contact me soon. Fingers crossed...
Thanks for the info guys.
Good luck! Def a good sign.
However, it really just depends how nice/free the interviewer is also. If i'm not doing shit and I get a nice thank you e-mail, I wouldn't mind saying "nice talking to you, good luck".

Interview Follow-Up Advice (Originally Posted: 03/27/2013)
I'm currently in the interview process for a role that I really think I am a good fit for. So far, I've had a phone interview with my point of contact in HR (3 weeks ago) and a four-person panel interview last week with the same HR member, another member from HR and two Directors (in the actual group I'd be looking to join). The HR team just sat-in, and didn't ask any questions. Post-panel interview, I sent thank you notes to each of the panelists (for which I received no response, go figure).
I'm hoping to reach out to the team later this week. Do you suggest I follow up directly with one of the Directors (in particular, the one that I received positive vibes from during the interview)? Or should I reach out to the HR rep who I've been speaking with? I don't want to step on any toes by bypassing HR and directly contacting a Director - for instance, if the Director forwards my email to HR asking her to contact me. But at the same time, they will obviously know more, and I probably will get a better idea of where I stand based on their response (or lack of response), as opposed to the usual cookie-cutter feedback from HR.
I have never been through an interview process where HR is THIS involved (i.e. panel interview with the group, etc.), so I want to make sure I'm approaching this the right way. Let me know what you think.
Replied to your PM - sorry took so long.
Interview follow up - Small PE firm (Originally Posted: 11/11/2013)
just interviewed last week with super small PE firm. I feel like the interview went well but i want to call and follow up with the partner that interviewed me. How long should I wait to call? also, is it a good sign that he towards the end of the interview he started talking about $$$?
Never call to follow up. It's awkward. Email him two or three days after the interview. Keep it short and sincere, too - thank them for the opportunity. Don't bother with questions or long-winded responses.
what about the fact that he ended the interview asking me how much $$ i want, is that any kind of positive sign.
I've had an interview today - Should I follow up directly or wait a week? (Originally Posted: 02/08/2014)
Inb4 use the search function. Most of my fellow primates in this forum follow up after a week. However, would a thank you letter to the associate, within a day, be too pushy? It's a sales internship role in a BB.
