Interview Scheduled... Until I Mentioned I Was Not Local

So, after pounding the pavement, I got a call from a bulge bracket for banking interviews. (Inside: YEEEES!) They gave me a specific time slot. I mentioned that I was currently not local, but that I'd be happy to fly out. I mentioned that it would be great if travel arrangements could be made, but that I'd be willing to foot the bill if not. After some phone tag, HR called back and said:

"I spoke with the group, and they are reconsidering their needs. They said they will circle back with you once they have determined how they want to move forward."

So, here I was scheduled for interviews, and then suddenly not. I asked HR if it had to do with me not being in the area -- though I had worked and lived in the area before -- HR said no. (Hmmm.)

Mind you, all of the above took place over the course of just 6 hours... from interview invite to final word.

WTF?

Did I just blow it with the "I'm not currently in the area/could the bank fly me out?" BS? Or perhaps they were going to bring me in to sort of keep me in the pipeline, though they really did not know how they were going to move forward, etc? Seen that done before. F.

Thanks zeropower. This was just yesterday. Interview was scheduled until I mentioned I was not in the area, etc. It's tough because I want to be in this particular city but don't currently live there. What can you do about that?

zeropower:
Sounds like you never actually got the interview? Or perhaps they were led to believe you were in the general area?

Either way dont worry about it too much, send a follow up email saying youd really appreciate the opportunity and would not disappoint - but keep applying elsewhere. Preferably locally

Well, i suppose move there is the Captn Obvious response. Nice to have job security first though... Id network over email and phone a lot with people in the city and then you have a solid reason to come in for, not just a hunch.

Job was never there, they thought yyou were a good candidate though and figured it can't hurt to have you in just in case something comes up. Then when you said you weren't local, they saved you a couple hundred dollars and four months "on hold" for something that most likely would never materialize. Just my take, most likely scenario.

Thanks for the input. My buddy said the same thing. Think you're right.

Yeah everything everyone said is most likely true. Because a BB flying you out is no big issue at all.
