Intnl Student - Why America/NYC?
Have a superday coming up and as a US citizen who has lived abroad almost my entire life, how would I answer "Why America" or "Why NYC"? Would it be sufficient to comment on the sheer size of the economy and opportunity to work with some of the largest, most established, companies in the world?
Because the usa is the best country in the world. Greatest economy, greatest military, back to back world war champs, home to wallstreet and silicon Valley, you can drive ford 350s and other huge trucks with space to park them, and most importantly you can buy an ar15 and thousands of rounds of ammunition without being detained by your government (actually on second thought..you can't do that in nyc...stay the hell away from that hellhole).
Personally think "Why America?" question would be much easier to answer than "Why [Europe or Asia]?".
First, you are talking about the largest economy with one of the most integrated and transparent financial markets in the world. Ultimately, as an analyst, this would equate to more exposures to deals and learning opportunities. Also, assuming that you are interviewing for a US-based bank, it's a no-brainer that you'd want to be at the main office rather than at a regional office. Lastly, since you are a US citizen, just tell them that you are looking for an opportunity to move back home.
Break into song. I'd recommend Empire State of Mind by JZ, or New York New York by Sinatra (you'll have to read the room to know which one).

Intl here. Came to America for college in the Midwest region and transferred to NYC this year. It's definitely diverse in terms of the race so you can pick up different perspectives and learn from them. Also in terms of IB experiece, Asian regional firms are called securities firms and focus on ECM/ECM stuff because M&A market is realtively small. If you are going for M&A, would be a good reason for why NYC right? And above all, I love party. Go Badgers.
Hey, thanks for that! I have a question for you, how would you suggest I present myself as: a US student who has been studying abroad, or as an international student? I didn't live there for very long so I don't feel too connected to it but I wonder if saying I'm a US student studying abroad just makes me seem like every other US applicant? Vs if I say I'm a student from XYZ country who wants to work in the US it might help me stand out more? What are your thoughts, what was your experience like telling people you were international?
Yeah no problem dude. Just wanna clear things up here tho when you say you've been studying abroad as a US student does that mean you were living in a different country, say Asia, and came back to America for school and recruiting? Or you originally come from a different country but have been living in the US since a child and now recruiting in the US?
FWIW, my experience with my international background only mattered when visa problem arose and maybe the interview wanted to see my broad understanding of geographical situations in Asia in addition to America. Other than that, I have had no problem.
