Inv Banking MBA - Entrepreneurship?
If I go the MBA route how important is it that the focus be in IB/Corp Finance?
If I apply to Entrepreneurship focus since it matches my CURRENT position, in hopes of getting into top 10 so that my story makes more sense, will prospective employers care so much that my MBA was focused on Entr. as opposed to IB/Corp Fin?
As told by a recruiter, the 3 most useless MBA concentrations are
leadership management entrepreneurship
Don't do it unless that's what you want to do forever.
^^^ Yup.
Learning about those things in a classroom setting is akin to learning to play tennis by reading books, watching instructional videos, watching pro highlights, listening to good players talk about how to play the game, and never actually picking up a racquet.
TheRapist, i totally agree with your assessment about MBA Entrepreneurship, as I'm a young director at a small firm with a couple (1 now) MBA's under my management..i read MBA textbook and it reeks of idealism and theory so far removed from actual practice...but that wasn't my Q...
My ONLY reason for applying to MBA Ent. as opposed to MBA Private Equity is that I have a BETTER CHANCE of getting in (I assume) b/c
a) I'm currently at entrepreneurial position and my essays will make more sense (MBA to learn more about my filed, though we both know MBA is BS knowledge wise, great self-marketing wise)...
b) MBA - Private Equity is at a hiring freeze and MBA's are submitting less people in
c) MBA - Private Equity is generally more competitive
d) On my resume, assuming I graduate with MBA - Entrepreneurship, will GS/MS/Lazard/SAC Capital/Bridgewater really CARE that my MBA is Entrepreneurship vs. Inv Banking/Corp Fin???
D is a biggie, again I'm posing the question understanding half the sht b-school will spew to me about Entrepreneurship I probably own them in life due to my current position..it's just a matter of playing the game and bettering my chances, graziii
Pre-MBA banking exp + MBA in Entrepreneurship = OK No banking exp + MBA in Finance = OK No banking exp + MBA in Entrepreneurship = Most likely not OK
The whole idea of MBA is to provide you an opportunity to change your career path. The schools won't care that much if you have prior banking exp or not. If you are really interested in working in a bank after your MBA, then do a Finance concentration. You are currently in some entrepreneurship related business, and if you go on to do an Entrepreneurship MBA, then the signal you are sending to recruiters in the bank is that you want a long term career in entrepreneurship.
Btw, not to piss you off or to discourage you, but your discussion about PE concentration is probably irrelevant here given you have no pre-MBA banking/PE exp.
thanks ukon, yes that's a qualm of mine in that i don't have much direct ib/pe experience pre-MBA..
it's just i hear that an MBA is an MBA (ie on my resume would I actually put down my concentration?) I've heard from this site and others that you'd normally put 'MBA, School, GPA, Year, Curriculumn/Activities, etc.' and it's rare to show your concentration on resume.. am i wrong in thinking this?
will MBA Entr. automatically ding me from ib/pe positions? (ps i put PE as an example, knowing i'd probly have to do a couple years at IB role before PE even becomes a possibility).. basically is MBA concentration weighted heavily despite others saying MBA on resume is MBA and school name matters more?? denkaa
