Invest in Nokia?

Nokia is hovering around a 13 year low and their CTO just stepped away. Their strategy is to work with MSFT on the next smart-phone to compete with iPhone and android (telling you things you already know). They still have great market share (though rapidly declining) What do you guys think? A worthy (though risky) investment for long term hold

Nokia hung onto their Symbian platform for far too long. I don't think MSFT will be able to grab a firm hold of market share when competing in the smartphone market against iOS and Android...

Perhaps in the Tablet market since that's still blossoming... but I don't think Nokia is planning on producing Tablets.

Shares of whale oil companies were also at a 13 year low once.

To play devil's advocate, I have read some research reports that claim windows phone will be the second largest mobile operating (after android) within the next 5 years.

Undoubtably, this is driven by the Nokia deal. So while most people on here, myself included, would not make this trade. There is always the other side of the coin, and if Elop manages to turn Nokia back into its dominating self, then those who buy now will see a nice return.

and it closed at 6.29 today. Going with above if MSFT hits a home run nokia has the hardware capabilities it'd revive it enough to make a very generous return but im thinkin worst case scenario it flops drops to around ~3-4 and gets acquired?

Only investing 1K so it wouldn't be a huge loss and it's a low % of my portfolio

I'm a tech junkie, and cell phones are my expertise. I've made an incredible return from HTC over the past year and successfully shorted RIM.

I would suggest not betting against Nokia. They produce the best hardware for mobile phones, that's not even really a debate. The N8 might still be the best hardware out now for a phone. And I don't know what you guys think about Windows Phone, but I worked with a guy last summer who had a dev kit on his phone. It's a very sleek and intuitive UI, and is drastically different from iOS or Android.

However, it is a relatively young, and so far unsuccessful, OS. But it is making strides. The future update, Mango, looks awesome and has some original features. And once Nokia releases their first WP7 product, it might produce similar results for WP7 that Android saw from the release of the Motorola Droid. And if WP7 does well (it will), that's only a bigger and longer revenue stream for Nokia.
