Investing friend / family’s money in co-invest?

I can co invest in deals and a close friend wants to co-invest in them as well. Only I can invest at my fund though, so his investment would need to be in my name. Is there any way to do this without opening an LLC? I realize you can gift $13k without reporting, so technically could gift $5k and invest it but then if proceeds are $25k there’s an issue, correct?
