Investment banking interviews - Analyst vs. Associate
How would an interview for a prospective Associate differ from that of an Analyst, if at all? (in terms of types of questions asked). Should one prep differently?

i never interviewed for analyst spots (only associate), but I would say associate interviews are much more about fit. I had some technicals but nothing too crazy and some interviews had no technicals whatsoever. You are (theoretically) in it for the long haul at the associate level, and also peers with the interviewer age-wise (roughly) so it's more about being someone they want to hang out with. The old airport test.
To piggyback on this, I have not interviewed as an Associate, but I am a full time Analyst, and I would agree that the Associate process is likely more fit-based. You can't skate through without knowing core finance knowledge, but the firm and group really want to see that you are a quality fit because you are supposed to be making the decision to come on long term... Analysts still need to pass the fit test, but if they aren't a great fit, the group/firm looks at it like it's just a 2 year test...
From what I hear, associate interviews have a lot more case questions. Banks expect you to have a lot more real world experience and the MBA should have prepare you how to analyze problems beyond the scope of most undergrad degrees.
Thanks for the thoughts guys!
Difference b/w Analyst and Associate interviews? (Originally Posted: 04/24/2010)
For post college and post MBA schools, assuming both haven't got any finance experience in past? Associate more technical?
Thanks!
