Investors Bet Against the Georgian Chicken Market

From this NPR article, I learned that a Hedge Fund thought chicken companies (Tyson, Pilgrim’s Pride, Sanderson Farms) had grown too fast and decided to short their stock. The suggested misevaluation was supposed to be reflected by a fall in chicken prices, but, after some time, their bet was still not paying off and the price of chicken was stable, perhaps even rising. The Hedge Fund thought prices were being kept artificially high, so they hired a lawyer who discovered that negligence was causing Georgia’s index to be 30 – 50% higher than other chicken indexes. And now Big Chicken is being sued.

Looking for other unconventional Hedge Fund strategies, I found this article from 2011 about Fine Art Fund Group.

From the article,

“With his team of 35 asset managers, marketing analysts, art experts, art dealers, auction house managers and academics, Hoffman scours the world for underpriced art…”

Also, this Bloomberg article is about Hedge Funds making money from bets on the future price of exotic assets like cheese and sunflower seeds.

It seems like almost everything is becoming available bet on these days, regardless of if you are an individual on a site like BetMoose or a Hedge Fund. Maybe someday there will be a way to bet on your own performance related to personal/professional goals.

Monkeys, what are some other unusual bets placed by investment funds? Or are these types of bets more common than I think they are?
