Invitation to Come to GS NYC Office -- What to Expect?

Hi everyone,

I'm a sophomore undergraduate at a non-target school with a mediocre gpa studying Finance with a minor in Econ.

This past semester, GS hosted a Case Study Competition. This competition is only held every few years essentially so that you only have one chance to be a part of this competition. Also, three alum from our school who currently work at GS were the judges of the competition. That being said, my team and I took it very seriously since it was a big deal for us to do well.

Long story short, we were the last group to present and when we finished the judges mouths dropped. There was supposed to be a 5-minute questioning period and all they asked was how we knew each other and how we put our group together since we had a diverse pool of majors. Before any of these questions though, one of the alum said, "If I were to close my eyes and listen to your pitch, I can imagine it being given by some of my colleagues at 200 West." We ended up winning the competition.

Afterwards, one of the alum/judges came up to me and gave me his secretary's email. I had been on a few networking trips and was already connected with him on LinkedIn, but we haven't had a full-blown conversation yet. I don't think he really recognized me until this competition. He told me to email his secretary and set up a time to meet (I was invited to the NYC office in the middle of the day) when I'm back home in NY and we're meeting tomorrow. This isn't for an internship or anything, but this alum is one of the two heads of the alumni-board in GS for my school.

What can I expect from this meeting? I doubt it'll be bs questions about my resume and job experience since he's told me he hates bs. He was a client portfolio manager in the equities division and is now a VP in multi-asset class portfolio solutions.

Thanks for all you help! If you can either give me some insight if you've had a similar experience or questions you think are worth asking it would mean a lot!

Make sure you brush up on your technicals, know how things flow through the three statements, walk me through a dcf, etc. Everything should be pretty standard.

It doesn't hurt to brush up on technicals but tbh it will probably be a chill chat with him. He probably thinks you know the technicals highly so he'll probably want to learn more about your motivation and background. If I were you, I would feel like I have upper hand and feel very confident going forward. If he is the captain of your school team, then your're talking to the right person. He can essentially get you to a super day assuming you aren't horrendous on your HireVue
