Invite-only recruiting events?

I'm a junior at a target school. I've been going to all of the recruiting events/coffee chats for a big-3 firm, but just found out that they are hosting an invite-only dinner for a select amount of applicants that I was not invited to.

My question is, how do they determine who goes and who doesn't? Also, does not getting invited to this mean that my chances of getting a 1st round interview at this firm are over?
