Yeah, I would like to ask people what phone they think I should get. I'm about to start my international travels (late sept) and so I need an unlocked phone. Here is what I am looking for in the order of importance -- I currently have verizon but can put the account on hold when i leave for 3 months at a time (and 6 months out of the year).

  1. unlockable - so i can pop in local sim cards and pay local rates
  2. would like a qwerty keyboard (touch screen learning curve would slow me way down)
  3. 8megapixel camera+
  4. good calendar functionality + emails, etc.

I was strongly considering the HTC Touch Pro 2. Even though it is bulky, it has almost everything on the list above (except the camera kind of sucks).

Does anyone know of any other smart phones that are has all of the features above? I'm willing to drop $500 for the right phone so woudl appreciate any insight. Should I get one from Amazon or are there better places online?

Thanks, Patrick

Check out the Nokia E72. It has a qwerty keyboard and you can buy it already unlocked. The camera is only 5 MP though. I've not used it personally but I've used its predecessor, the E71, and absolutely loved it.

Droid Incredible. Not as huge as the EVO but has the VZW network, tons of apps, 8mp camera, has a removable battery, removable storage in form of micro SD card, 8 GB of flash memory pre-installed, and it grants three wishes, even if that wish is for an iPhone 4.

For all the iPhone people out there:

...would love to get this but VZN customer service told me non of the Droids can be unlocked...true / false, risky to try and get one unlocked?

actually, the main problem is it's not quad-band so not good for international travel. thanks though. checking out the nokia now.

Droid (Verizon) phones are CDMA anyways, so even if you unlock them, you can't pop sim cards in and out (coz CDMA doesn't use those).

yeah, still leaning to the htc touch pro 2. Thing looks like a brick, but it is unlockable quad band, has touch screen and keyboard and all the features of the latest phones...except for the camera.

Droid X on Verizon is pretty sweet, Samsung Captivate is hands down the best Android smartphone on AT&T. I've played with almost all the smartphones out there. Android phones take a week or two to get used to, especially coming from an iPhone, but you'll be absolutely blown away by the functionality.
