iPhone -- Useful or Distracting?

Do you get distracted by your phone at work? At my internship this summer my phone was constantly going off with snapchat, groupme, facebook notifications, etc... I will start FT in a few months and want to avoid the distraction, as getting caught looking at snapchat seems like a great way to make a terrible impression. This is probably more of an issue for people in and right out of college, as I assume once you've been in the workforce for a few years this becomes less of an issue.

Anyone else have this problem? Have any of you ever thought about dumbing down to a flip phone? Something that calls, texts, and emails with a battery that lasts for a week is starting to sound much more appealing than a $400 social media mini computer.

Define distracted. Mine sits on my desk on silent and I just go on it if someone messages me. As long as you're not just perched on social media all day and constantly messaging people to the extent that you're always on it or you're missing work / deadlines, it's fine. If that is happening though, you should probably just grow up and put the phone down. If you don't have a reason to be on your phone, don't go on it.

EDIT: Message was expanded while I was typing. Why don't you just practice some self-control and catch up on your snapchat or whatever when you go to lunch or grab a coffee or whatever.

True this. If it's so hard to ignore all those blips on your screen, maybe lock it in your drawer? You could always catch up when taking a dump (I do that).

Also, when the workload is actually huge and the deadline is nigh, I find it almost impossible to check my phone, even if I want to. Because there's simply no time to get distracted. Hope your FT workload would be just enough so you could worry less about this distraction.

Hope you could get over this soon!

I've been there man.

Have you tried Boom Beach? It's made by the same developers, and over time I've come to enjoy it a lot more. Apologies in advance for any productivity hits.

Turn off the notifications. Don't look at your phone when it would be inappropriate or rude to do so (in meetings, when others are talking, etc). Or if you can't help yourself get a separate work phone and turn your personal to airplane mode or put it away during the day and only take it out when you take a shit or are eating lunch/dinner and can check it. I'd recommend a personal and work phone anyway but that's a different discussion.

I'm not the kind of person who has self-control over a number of things (drinking, anger, etc.), so I can empathize. My rules:

  1. Don't take your phone to meetings. Leave it at your desk or in a briefcase if you're out of the office.

  2. Use your phone when you take a shit. That's a good time for distractions.

  3. Discontinue your account with Facebook. Stay connected with your real friends and stop being 'friends' with people you don't really want to talk to in real life.

  4. I thought snapchat was for sending dick pics. Why are so many people sending you dick pics?

If you can't ignore your phone when you have something to finish or do is a lame excuse for you being a lazy person. If you really can't handle it get a flip phone.

Why are so many people in this thread so extreme saying get rid of phone or only check it at lunch? I look at my phone at my desk and no one cares as long as I'm doing what I'm supposed to and get it done on time. You're allowed to have a life. I keep mine on silent and check probably once an hour if there's any messages. If not, then I continue doing work--but if there's a message I'll spend 2 minutes responding...

This.

I was waiting for someone to finally say this. Unless you are just plain terrible at your job, no one will care.

Apple Watch will change your life. Not even being sarcastic. I always left my phone on my desk and would only glance at it very occasionally to see if any of my friends needed something urgent. Most of the time it's stuff that can be replied to later. With the Apple Watch, I've been able to glance at my wrist casually whenever I need to and get all the notifications I want (and none that I don't want) very conveniently--then only pick up my phone to respond as necessary. Sometimes, when I don't wear the watch, I actually feel more pressure to be checking my phone to see things coming through...so I'd say the watch is a net reducer of your phone-separation-anxiety.

For $350, it's a great purchase.

If you can't put your phone down, the problem isn't the phone. The solution isn't locking it in a drawer somewhere and only checking it at lunch, the solution is having some semblance of self control and the maturity to know when it's ok to check Facebook and when it's not. Get a grip.

I didn't mean to give off the impression that I was addicted to my phone or nervously grabbing it every 2 seconds, I just find it annoying to constantly be getting notifications (at work and outside, but sitting at a desk for 9 hours a day made it much more obvious) and was curious to hear from anyone who's thought about or actually dumbed down to a flip phone as a way to eliminate distractions from your day.

It depends entirely on weather said BB has a blackberry server. That being said, I currently have an iPhone 3G and wish I'd have gotten a blackberry curve. The iPhone reminds me of windows vista, lots of toys and fun for a week but eventually it gets bloody annoying.

I never realized how crackberried out I was after 4 years until this past weekend when my phone broke...i suffered from phantom vibrations and blinking red light halucinations...i agree that your life will revolve around you bberry

anyway touch screen devices like the i-phone and Storm are not the most efficient devices...im currently stuck with a Pearl as i like the one-handed suretype

enjoy your time now without the technological chain that will be your mobile device

You get a BB at work so why would you get one for your personal phone? You'll be cringing when it goes off with work calls/emails so you are gonna need a different phone so that you don't have panic attacks when it's just your mom calling.

Also since I assume you're not a 15 year old girl you probably aren't texting all day so having touch screen v keyboard won't save you much time.

Basically apps are amazing and such. The downside is it can be distracting at times. It's not the greatest device for making calls and it's expensive, but I don't regret owning one for an instant.

I have it (although I am only a student, not a banker)

The one thing that is a pain in the ass is that the mail doesn't get pushed through to your phone. Your choices for how often your phone will refresh your mailbox is 15min,30min, 60min, Manually. This can suck especially in a job where I am assuming you need mail ASAP. However, there is a solution.. you can download Microsoft Outlook for like 6.99 and set up your mail through that and get it to push notifications so you get email immediately like BB. (is just a pain in the ass)

Also, iPhone sucks with auto-correcting text and usually f**ks up your words but you get used to it.

Overall though, it is the fastest running phone i've ever had, has more capabilities than any other phone, is unbelievably user friendly and basically makes your life 2x easier.

Not true. You can set up almost any email account to come through as push on the iphone (gmail, yahoo and exchange server I believe). My work email runs through the Gmail Business Application and it works great with calendars, contacts, and mail. Everything syncs almost instantly between my phone, the web and my outlook on my comp. And everything is backed up.
