Is anyone here working in economic research at an investment bank?
Hi, I'm very interested in economic research careers at investment banks. there are tons of Q&A sessions on this forum about people in S&T, IBD, ER, consulting, and so on. but none on economic research (or any investment research subfield other than ER).
If there is anyone here working in economic research and has some time, it would be great to hear from his or her daily responsibilies, work content, career paths, exit opps, qualifications/ skills required, compensation (only a rough idea ofc).
thanks a lot!
There was just a thread about this in the ER forum...
In a nutshell, there are very few equity/market economist positions available (ie a research shop only needs one or two to go with their research team, if even that). If you want to do it, you'll eventually need a masters in economics. More than likely you'd end up doing some government/think tank work though...
ok. still interested though. would appreciate to hear from someone who works in this field.
Economic research at BB banks? (Originally Posted: 03/31/2012)
So I know all the BB banks have in-house economists that come up with GDP growth estimates, random stats you read in the economist, etc. My question is how large are these groups typically? What qualifications do they typically look for at the associate level (ie do you have to have a PhD?)
I currently work for a top econ consulting firm, which I love for the time being but won't be staying forever. My work is a lot of programming, statistics, econometrics, etc. Do you think these groups would see my past work experience as relevant? Would someone qualify for the associate (or equivalent) role with 3 or 4 years of past experience in economics but pre MBA/grad school.
Some of these questions might be dumb. Thanks for your help!
Those teams are small. 3-5 people covering a region. Usually they are all senior and not many associates. This is just at my BB; however, we do have a pretty respected economist team.
Thanks for the info, guys.
I currently work at a top econ consulting firm and have come across the same interest as you now. Do you mind telling me what you ended up doing 5 years down the line? Your guidance would mean a lot.
5yrs? that dude is likely long gone, brah
If you succeed in raising him/her from the dead, mad props.
