Is Barclays M&A internal to industry coverage? No dedicated team? (EMEA)
From the careers website it looks that way, though it isn't explicitly stated. Is anybody in a position to confirm this?
http://joinus.barclays.com/emea/investment-bank/investment-banking-divi…
This thread seems to contradict that: http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/barclays-top-ibd-groups-in-ukeu
Yet this WSJ article seems to confirm it: http://blogs.wsj.com/deals/2012/04/16/barlcays-combines-corporate-finan…
Please let me know if I am interpreting the website and article correctly. I want to state this as one of the reasons I want to work at Barclays but will look a fool if it's not correct.
I can speak to the Americas, but believe EMEA is the same. Barclays does not have an external M&A team. They have dedicated M&A bankers that sit within the industry teams....so you'll have people that are in TMT or Power or whatever, that focus exclusively on M&A. Typically at the junior level, however, people don't specialize between the M&A and traditional coverage...that happens more at the VP level and above.
If you're early in the recruiting process it may be best to clarify during a Q&A session.
Thanks for your reply (no SBs to give atm!)
So as a (summer) analyst there would be no distinction as to whether I was in the M&A side of the coverage group or the ... other side (pitching/relationship management and other products)? But as you get promoted you are formally distinguishable between one or the other? Thanks for clarifying this.
actually Barclays has external M&A team in London (Frankfurt as well), that WSO thread you linked has good info it is arguably the best team over there, certainly on par with PUI
could be structured differently in US, cant speak about that, but definitely they have M&A team along other product groups such as LevFin
P.S. you can always check linkedin or ask around
I owe you for potentially saving me from an embarrassing interview! Good idea to use LinkedIn to check this, there are indeed M&A analysts in London at least.
no probs mate
any thoughts on the Barclays top IBD groups? (aside from what has been mentioned around here) since you are having interview i figured you are probably well updated
share if you got any insight, it'd be much appreciated.
PUI and M&A seem to be top in the UK as you said. Natural Resources is strong on the Street not sure if this translates to the City too. I'll get back to you in a few weeks if I remember, once I've been through the process. My research into the London office's recent deals has generally impressed me though.
