Is Equity Research really decent at getting exit opps to top AM and HFs?

It's hard to corroborate this claim on LinkedIn, since it's hard to get linkedin to search correctly. Can people name some exits they've seen in the past?

Thanks

Is it the quality of analyst that matters more for buyside exits or being at a bigger firm (like a bb or wells or even MM full service shops)? I.e. would you rather work for a top ranked analyst at boutique (think autonomous, bernstein, evercore, tag, wolfe) or an okay one at a bulge.

What about middle market boutiques like Piper or Raymond James?

Quality of Analyst is clearly key. Some PMs like to hire from firms where the research fits with their investment process (less training). Others will take a junior analyst (sub 5 years) that has the skills irrespective of firm.

Not sure why the focus on going with top firm when the focus ought to be 1) top manager (doesn’t last forever) 2) potential analyst upside (not strictly comp, more ability to learn and develop as an analyst) within role 3) age of management team (unless you think you will start a new product as a PM with the firm) when might the PM retire? Is the assistant PM in line?

Every PM is different and they are the ones making the ultimate decision for people on their teams.

Personally, I would focus on 1) get a job on SS if that is your goal. 2) become an expert on the space and know how to model. 3) transition to full coverage on SS or start looking for buyside exit after 3-5 years on SS and don’t focus on name focus on potential growth of AUM for the sector/managers you target
