Is following up without a question a good idea?
I have not been in touch with some contacts for a while and I plan to send some follow up emails to them.
I want to prepare some questions to ask them but I don't want to seem like I ask them only for the sake of asking them.
Is it appropriate that I just give them an update about myself and say that I hope I can speak to them again? Normally to a friend I would do that but I feel like my contacts would not be interested in what I'm doing now and think I'm wasting their time.
Just ask them for a quick 10 minute call so you can get their opinions on something. If you had an internship or are FT then just talk to them about that and your future opportunities.
