Is HR going to give me the boot right at the door? - How does the HR process work?

Hi monkeys,

I have a short story that I'd like to share with you, and a follow up question to ask:

I've been lurking/posting on WSO for a while now, and have been putting a lot of the information on this site into practice. As a result, I've been working my ass off this entire summer, with two finance-related jobs, and have also been networking aggressively. I've been following all of the tips that I've read on this site, and have developed a great book of contacts. Additionally, I go to a target school, have a strong GPA, and solid work experience.

The only problem is that when my full name is Googled, a suspect page comes up as the first result. I included more information in a link at the bottom. For reasons that are difficult to explain, it's not possible for me to "Google-bomb" this result and take care of it that way. Basically it's there to stay. For the record, this thread that results is basically a situation that I handled very poorly as a freshman idiot, but is in no way criminal (at least, no criminal charges were ever filed. My criminal history is completely clean).

Does anybody know how the HR process works, and whether or not this incident will keep me from getting into the investment banking industry? I've been working really hard over the past year in pursuit of an investment banking position, and am sincerely hoping that HR isn't going to automatically ding me for this. The worst part for me is knowing that the e-allegations against me are entirely untrue, and am hoping that due to the wild wild west nature of the internet, HR might disregard or at least question it.

If anybody can shed any light on this matter, I would really appreciate it. I'm really worried, and could use the opinions of current bankers / people who have worked with the HR process.

I've kind of experienced this the other way around as a potential intern. The boutique I was considering interning at after receiving the offer, I Googled the Founder of the firm and a lawsuit had been filed against him two years prior for alleged sexual harassment. No charges were ever filed against him or the boutique. As I guy, I didn't care but it might have posed problems for the firm.

With your university being there, in the small chance they ever question you about it, I would say it's hard to convince them that it's not you. So just take ownership and explain your situation and most importantly emphasize it was a misunderstanding and that no criminal charges were filed. HR will likely see it if you get deep into the interview process. The most critical part is that you have no criminal record.

background checks are only done post offer so I doubt some heresay on the internet would hold a lot of weight over the multitude of interviews, etc you would have done by that point. if they did find it, you'd get the chance to explain it so no need to worry. also if you've got sold w/e which i assume is something front office in a bb or mm then you would have had a background check done already.

if you're really worried, when you apply just don't put your middle name on the applications. i don't.

Thank you for your thoughts, fellas.

Unfortunately, that's not an option, as it's not my "middle" name that's distinguishable.

I'm wondering how the HR process for interviews work. I have to drop my resume by a certain date, let's say November 1st. First-round interviews are then held on November 20th. That's a lot of time for employers and HR to do a quick Google on all of the applicants on top of going through resumes / cover letters / networking referrals.

That's what I'm worried about -- like the title of my post suggests, that they'll ding me before I even get a chance to interview, despite my good resume and networking efforts.

To the poster above requesting more information, I linked some more info in my original post. It is not slander regarding anything sexual (he assaulted me, etc.).

I work at a BB now and I'm doing some work with them regarding 2013 intake. with the number of applications they receive they have absolute no time to be doing anything so frivolous lol. last year there were an average of 350 applications per place and for certain desks there were 800+ for one place. and this is AM, not IB which i assume will be more competitive.

i've read the other post and you have nothing to worry about at all. just don't put your real name on the internet again! another idea is to set up a linkedin account as they are always the top result on google. if you were especially sneaky what you could do is simply set up lots of linkedin/facebook profiles with your name to push this dodgy one down.

Hey darety, thanks for your thoughts. It was really informative.

Just wanted to bump this thread to get some fresh thoughts from people who might not have seen it last time around. Still pretty worried about this situation, and looking to get some thoughts from people who have contact with HR and their procedures.

Thank you, everyone.
