Is it a Bad Idea to Email HR and Ask About Average First Year Analyst Compensation?
The title pretty much says it all. I accepted a return offer from a MM investment bank in NYC. I just want to confirm what my ballpark compensation is going to be in my first year (primarily my bonus). I've looked at salary statistics on this site but I just want confirmation.
Absolutely! I did the same thing, they are usually pretty open about this information.
In all seriousness no, why would you ever do this?
Maybe he wants to figure out where to live/commute from based off of his income
Goes back to the old adage of live off your salary and bank your bonus...
Yeah that's a pretty big part of it. My family is also struggling financially so I wanted to know how much I could realistically send back home.
They’ll probably give you a boilerplate answer along the lines of “all bonuses are discretionary”. No point in asking through official channels.
I see, and I'm assuming its a bad idea to try an ask an analyst (given that they were super chill with the interns over the summer)?
Honestly man, you're not going to be able to get any clarity on this. They can tell you one thing, but it means nothing in the context of you in the specific year that you'll receive your bonus. I understand the family thing (been there), but like others have suggested you need to budget as if your base is all you'll ever get. Then the bonus is just gravy.
I wouldn’t press the issue - as said in this thread, your bonus is not guaranteed and varies by person, by year. At best you’ll get a ballpark figure.
So you signed an offer and weren't told what you were going to be paid?
Yeah this is confusing to me...
I know what my base and signing bonus are because those are given in the offer letter. Its just the yearly bonus that I'm unsure of.
No use - trust me HR will just blow you off because bonus numbers aren't released, atleast officially.
Why not just call and pre-negotiate your bonus?
Haha I don't think I'm in a position to do that.
