Is it a good time for me to get an MBA? When should you get an MBA?

Hi all, 28 year old here trying to do a career change into Finance. I was wondering if I am suitable for an MBA or if I should pursue a MSF instead. I've asked around and have gotten mixed messages, so I want to make sure I am being smart with my decisions. Some further information about me:

Undergrad: Case Western Reserve University, GPA of 3.363, Major in Psychology
Graduate School: Ohio University, Clinical Psych Ph.D. program. I did 5 years (out of the 7/8 that is required) got my M.S. but not my Ph.D. GPA is around 3.7.
I guess my concern is that I don't really have "work experience" which I believe MBAs are supposed to have.  I worked as a research assistant and clinician as part of my Graduate School Duties, so I have about 5 years of conducting psych research and 4 years of seeing psych clients, but I am not sure if this counts.
On the other hand, some people have told me that getting a MSF at my age is silly, and that I should just do a fulltime MBA instead at a top school. What would be the best pathway for me here?

MSF at the age of 28 is a bit worrying for employers. When individuals pursue an MSF degree, they are going for the Analyst roles. Roles that are mostly filled by Bachelor's candidates. It will put you in the same bucket as those 20-24 year old students. This is also a red flag for employers. Believe me - employers look at your age. This is the case why MBA candidates are around the age of 28 and mostly old candidates are rejected and suggested to do an EMBA.

I think you are more suited for an MBA, given your age currently. It will also put you level with the peers of same age. I don't know much about your past experience counting towards your work exp. I suggest calling/emailing schools and checking with them. Also give MBA Admission Consultants a shot (their free consultation) and see what they think. Doesn't hurt to get their opinion.

Now another issue with pursuing an MBA aside from work experience, will be your goals. Every top MBA program will question why did you go from Psychology Ph.D. program, to all of a sudden an MBA? This can be explained, as long as you have a good story.
