Is it Appropriate to Reach Out to Your Firm's Client Directly when a Job Opens?

One of the companies my firms works with has a recent job opening. They're a great firm and do some really interesting things out in the market. One of my direct managers interacts with one of the executives occasionally on deals and they meet up every now and then to catch up. I've met a few people in the firm because of this relationship and a position opened up where I think would report up direct to this aforementioned executive. I haven't heard back through the job site posting and have been considering calling the executive up myself to let him know I'm interested in the position.

However, I'm concerned that it opens me up to the risk that he tells my manager I'm looking around.

What do you guys think? Should I email this individual rather than call?
