Is it common for consultants to give up an MBA sponsorship?
Hey guys,
Would appreciate your wisdom on this, esp. from former MBA students. Have you met sponsored MBA students (esp. from MBB) who gave up their sponsorship to move into a different company/industry (incl. Finance/Consulting), thus having to give back the money? I am currently thinking of this aiming to transition into VC/FAANG role (in Europe). The main reason behind this is that I am pretty much fed-up with consulting (reasons include the lifestyle, a lack of tangible impact and the variability in the appeal of projects (e.g., hate to be staffed on long implementation/transformation studies as I like more the Finance/Commercial side of business) and was thinking of not coming back after my MBA.
On one side, I think it's crazy to give up 100k in paid tuition and a return offer, but on the other side I think I'm often wasting time in a job I don't enjoy that much (don't get me wrong, there are still many aspects that I like about it).
Hi RTW, hope I can help. Do any of these links cover what you're looking for:

It's tough. i have seen (in a limited sample) people who have given it up for a position with a FANG post-internship where they matched the offer (paid tuition in 4 years with stock) and then some people who switched consulting firms. The logic is, 150K is a lot of money. Take it for 2 years and then move to wherever you want. But a VC gig at FANG is hard to come along so u will likely not get it.
At hindsight, i would take the dream offer over the consulting one. you get only one life, live it. However, i did not make that decision, so you gotta make your own decision.
FANG stands for Friendster, AOL, Napster and Geocities, right?
