Is it inappropriate to ask about relocation expenses/support in an interview?
I am proceeding through several interviews and there is a possibility I might move. I grew up in NYC so I've never needed a car. Don't have much saved up and chances are I will need to get both a car and a place to live - so large upfront costs. I can commute to the possible jobs via public transport (1 company offers a shuttle from Manhattan to take employees) for a while but it will be hectic until I save enough for both a car and rent.
I'm thinking get a car first because the public transport in the states suck and it would be hard to reach the office even if I had an apartment. Don't know other people interviewing/working at the firms so hard to split transportation costs instantly.
I would worry about getting the offer first, and then ask for reloc. At that point, it won't affect their decision to hire you and they're more willing to throw in a couple thousand because they already want you.
Already had 4 interviews at 1 firm. That's why I ask. I only have 2 more left.
i wouldn't ask until you get the offer
Totally agree with the guys above. The reason it's important is because they feel more committed to you when they say 'this is our guy' and give you an offer. It gives you better leverage.
