Is it inappropriate to ask about relocation expenses/support in an interview?

I am proceeding through several interviews and there is a possibility I might move. I grew up in NYC so I've never needed a car. Don't have much saved up and chances are I will need to get both a car and a place to live - so large upfront costs. I can commute to the possible jobs via public transport (1 company offers a shuttle from Manhattan to take employees) for a while but it will be hectic until I save enough for both a car and rent.

I'm thinking get a car first because the public transport in the states suck and it would be hard to reach the office even if I had an apartment. Don't know other people interviewing/working at the firms so hard to split transportation costs instantly.
