Is my career over?
Hey everyone,
Hope you're all having a good day, first time poster on a discussion btw.
So basically I was working at a reknowned PE house for about 3 years (3 years ago), and I eventually got so frustrated over the internal politics and other issues that had built up over the years, that I quit on the spot over something that .someone said about me over email (that accidentally got sent to me by mistake, in hindsight it wasn't rude but it was very irritating as I read it as I was in the office on a Sunday evening and it talked about me being lazy !).
As a result of this knee jerk resignation, I kind of ended up having to be on gardening leave for 3 months, then joined a large bank in a similar role, but more back end work (so kind of a demotion, even though the role was more senior, the compensation was way less.
I stayed at this bank for 2 years and then decided to start my own business venture late last year, so I quit. Now my business venture didn't take off quite like I hoped, and it's increasingly difficult to get back into employment, it's almost as if I've been written off from everyone's books, I've applied so many times but no luck.
Has anyone else had a similar experience.
No, I have not had a similar experience. No, your career isn't over. Try your best to not make impulsive emotional career decisions again, especially quitting a job on a whim. I would consider business school if I were in a similar situation.
Do not give up and consider going for an MBA
Keep trying and get some thicker skin. There's gonna be tons of shit that people say that might rub you the wrong way; you gotta learn to shrug it off.
Why did you quit a new business venture after less than a year? If it is something you enjoy, stick with it.
or do the MBA thing like everyone else has suggested
Know several guys that quit their IB/PE/HF job to start a business that failed. They all have been able to leverage it to get into B school. Definitely seems worth applying
Why would you quit your business venture after only a year? I understand your position and I know it is hard to go from making an excellent salary to working without getting paid, especially if all of your peers are still making great salaries. However, most businesses take more than a year before taking off. I don't know what industry it is in but it takes some time before learning the ropes and actually making money. I would suggest you stick with your business longer and if all your legal work is done you can always just pivot the business into something else. However, if you really hate being an entrepreneur or don't like the hustle, I would advise to quit your business and keep trying to find another job.
Good luck !
1) I think the older in ones career gets its more and more important to rely on networking to get jobs. So many jobs are filled by a friend, friend of a friend, professional contact. Have you been leveraging your personal network? I'd focus a lot of time networking over applying to jobs blind. I mean between your college, friends, 5+ years of experience, you've got to know someone that knows someone, one would hope at least.
2) To the extent that you actually want to get an MBA great, do it. But for those people just say, meh throw up your hands you can just get an MBA as a career reset, that is a 150k 2 year cost. That is insane if doing it primarily because you can't get a job. Do it because you want to do it (and thing long/hard about the reasons/goals), if not, see bullet point 1.
Search the guy who started rickshaw on this forums. It didn't take off but he still landed another gig. Keep your head up man. Good luck!
