Is the internship I'm doing relevant?

Doing a risk management internship at a big 4 right now, and quite frankly, I don't quite like it. Its a freshman internship thats a month short. I've always been interested in getting into PE or even IBD, but I don't quite see how this internship I'm going through with would be relevant. Will this look like a bad stint on my resume? Will I be okay?... Any advice on future internships to break through PE? (will have opportunities to pursue two more internships after my sophomore and junior year). Do you think that this stint would be relevant to other finance areas? (VC, HF, AM, IBD)

Appreciate any replies.

Doing anything at all freshman year is huge, especially at a big 4. The name recognition will help you going forward.

Get a boutique IB internship for sophomore summer if you can. You may end up interviewing before that starts and will mostly talk about your freshman year job, so start thinking now about how you can spin your experience towards IB/PE.

Depends on your exact role, but could speak about enjoying the financial analysis aspect but wanted to actually work on those transactions, having to understand how small pieces of data change and affect the big picture, and the qualitative vs quantitative portions of the job. I wouldn’t say you didn’t like it or anything, just that the experience confirmed your interest in finance but you want to do something different. Most kids do nothing freshman year, so if you can talk about the experience well then you are well set up for recruiting.

I'll be doing a summer analyst internship at an MM PE (around $4B AUM next year as a sophomore intern. Assuming I keep up the pace of my college work and stuff and can intern anywhere I want to, where would you suggest me to do one? (Thinking of a boutique IBD as they are more prominent in my region). Would these internships set me up for a chance at a mega fund? (BX, KKR, etc)

Appreciate the reply.

Would your IBD internship be during the semester? If so, any boutique is suitable. If there's one that does a lot of deals in a particular sector you like, that's fine. Excellent PE internship for sophomore summer btw.

I'd try to get in on the early recruiting next spring (Feb-April) as you already seem prepared/have a lot to talk about, that way you can sign an offer and not worry about recruiting during your sophomore internship.

Hi chimps,

I am currently a rising freshman and this summer I worked at a very small (38M AUM) financial planning firm serving mostly public sector retirees.

My bosses are CFP not CFA (which I am interested in). I networked and have two offers at boutique IBs for next summer after freshman year (one is 2B AUM).

Sometimes you have to learn what you don't want to do first, I highlighted this in my interviews.

I'm still trying to learn everything I can about the industry, I'd love to hear from everyone!

(p.s. I banged this out quickly while waiting for comments, sorry for any grammar mistakes)
