Sleeping on the Job
So our monkeys' experiences and expertise with sleeping on the job was worth noting in this Businessweek article: "Sleeping on the Job? Good! Overachievers Do"
Rogoszinski is by no means a lone clandestine sleeper. Comments on Wall Street Oasis, a Web forum popular among investment bankers, reveal an obsessive interest in daytime napping, with tips on “sleep hacking” (moving to polyphasic sleep schedules), recommendations on where to doze (bathroom stalls, conference rooms), and directions for how to act when caught (as if nothing unusual had happened). When nodding off on a toilet, “you clearly need the seat down for maximum comfort,” advises one commenter, “which necessitates pants up to prevent your bare ass on the cold porcelain. Longest I ever slept uninterrupted without tipping over was two hours, from 4-6am.”

how do you breathe in that thing?
MODs make this post cover page, WSO was mentioned on the businessweek article. Also, someone paste the WSO excerpt from the article on the main post as well.

CaptK's hilarious comment is mentioned lol
.
^great question. The only thing I can think of is that it's meant for short power naps where breathing isn't important. For anything longer than that you should install a snorkel
This is absolutely retarded... if you're that sleep deprived, just forego the drinking/partying on the weekends and catch up on your Zs. I don't know a single person in the industry who only works and sleeps. There's always fat that can be cut if necessary.
/thread.
Well I always hoped to one day be in BusinessWeek, but I never thought my first appearance would be like this.
How many of you sleep in the office? (Originally Posted: 05/01/2012)
Jus wondering how many will grab 2-3 hours of sleep in the office rather than waste 1 hour roundtrip, plus 15 minutesish at home...
Solution: move closer to the office.
While at first you may not think it's worth it in terms of rent, i assure you when i was in London i had no problem paying about 200p/mo more for my room just because i was a 7minute walk from the City.
I try to get a power nap for 15-30 mins post dinner in a conf room around 2200 hrs to recharge my batteries a bit, sleeping during the day is way to risky imho
Definitely not as comfortable as going home to your bed, but if you have a small pillow and a gym/place to take a warm shower for when you wake up, it's not too bad.
Yeah I could see that the office proximity being nice
You guys are losers, go home and get some rest. It's not worth it grinding out all-nighters
If you look through your old threads there's quite a few about hours (http://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/how-much-earlier-do-analysts-leav…). With your attitude, if you do in-fact have an offer, I think you're going to struggle.
My #1 requirement for an apartment is that it is walking distance from the office. I will sleep at home thank-you
Do you guys wounder where the air hostess sleep on a plane? I found this video.
I say firms should invest in something like this rather than having analyst go crazy because of lack of sleep. Even one hour of sleep helps.
Some big law firms already have sleep areas.
Life is too long to pull all nighters all the time. I suggest getting sleep and hitting it hard when you get to work the next day.
Is there a bank that offers employees to sleep in the office? (Originally Posted: 12/17/2010)
I wonder , since it would be cheaper, if any bank offers their employees to like sleep and shower at the office. It seems decent enough if you are working 16 hours + and commuting is annoying.
DE Shaw has slumber parties.... but i dont think that is what you want
slumber trading would be fun. :D
You would probably not leave the office, ever.
Doesn't sound too bad to me. The first ten years, who plans to leave the office anyway? ^^
Law firm in LA remodeled awhile back and they put futons where the couch's used to be in the lounge and some offices
Someone told me a BB firm in HK has a nap room and research proved efficiency (however they were measuring it) in the division that had access to it rose 13% in a quarter. That, to me, is brilliant. That way no one has to hit the cold porcelain throne to get 15 minutes of shut-eye.
When I worked nights in a hospital in college I used to take naps in the breast feeding pump room thing since it was closed during the night shift...nice beds, TVs etc...I can see how naps would improve efficiency
That's what im Saying, What is the name of the company. SOunds like the perfect workplace for me.
I heard that you only get brainworms if you don't study hard enough. once you do it boils them down. 8)
At my shop ppl just sleep at their desks. I've done it a few times and, to be honest, when you have done a back to back all-nighter, noone is going to say shit to you for doing it.
Some banks have nap rooms. If there's an on-site gym, people can also shower there.
some have dry-cleaning service onsite, in London
UBS HK has a nap room.
A buddy of mine who did banking in Thailand said they had nap rooms
Friend at DB was allowed to bring sleeping bag. I think thats a novel idea.
I have never heard of anyone complaining about someone sleeping in the office. During our orientation two guys walked by the room and the MD recognized them and gave them big up's for not going home the night before. If you want to lay on a couch eyes closed from 4am-6am because you are working hard noone should give you shit.
GS NYC has a nap room
Sleeping at the office (Originally Posted: 12/18/2013)
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Past few weeks I've slept at office like once a week under my desk with a sleeping bag. The only person that knows is our support staff and one maniac MD who gets in at 530 AM.
Is this kosher?
It's ok to do every once in a while.
It's probably not kosher to cancel the lease on your apartment.
I've grabbed 2 hours of sleep in a conference room a couple times on what were otherwise all-nighters.
It's just not healthy, at least by the standards of 60-70 hour weeks in Quant Analytics. That's probably what an MD in Research would tell you if he noticed and said something about it.
In IBD, if you're expected to pull 120 hour weeks, they're probably going to be even less worried about this than in research.
Dude go home and stop having a sleeping bag in the office
Yeah I should have asked- you're keeping the sleeping bag somewhere out of sight, right? And this is just a couple times a month kinda thing?
i've heard stories of an analyst who actually lived in the office for a couple of months supposedly.. would stow his stuff/shower at a friend's place and sleep in the conference rooms.
This guy George would take naps under his desk so he had a shelf installed for an alarm clock, a drawer for a blanket and even a cup holder
Genius idea. I can see how that might get you into trouble though. I mean, what if you weren't there when the alarm went off? People might think it's a bomb ticking down or something
Air mattress on our floor. Was used frequently for both napping during serious live deal action or nursing a hangover.
Would recommend against it unless this is an office-wide thing. The analyst who's sleeping in his cube is usually also the analyst who's fucking up a lot. Senior guys value that kind of work ethic, sure, but they also value efficiency. So if you come across as perpetually overwhelmed by your work....it's not a good look.
Agree with what you were saying.. But laughed at the thought of an office-wide sleepover hahah.
For those of you who are/were sleeping at the office, which bank (BB, MM, Elite) and city were you in?
The better question would probably be what kind of tool are you? Mega, huge, elite?
hahahahahahahah
I'm in an elite boutique in NYC. It's not a firm wide thing. I don't feel overwhelmed by the work, I just prefer not to take a cab back to Harlem.
So you're at Lazard
I used to sleep in my tiny office a couple days a week before we moved to another building with open floor. Hence my raging fucking psychotic hatred of open floors. I moved closer to work this year though, so there's that.
A couple guys I know have mastered the ninja art of sleeping in a bathroom stall but I can not yet snatch that grasshopper from the master.
I've seriously considered sleeping in the MD's office near my cube that has a huge couch on it. Any thoughts?
ROFL. You know one morning you will oversleep/MD come in early and he goes wtf are you doing on my couch and awkward moment.
If it's anything like Don Draper's couch you may want to do a quick shine on it with a black light to get a sense of what areas of the couch to shy away from.
