Is there a way to see HF returns without bloomberg?
When recruiting for HFs, I assume it is important to join a firm that has had good returns recently...

Ask them in the interview. If they won't tell you assume the worst unless you can independent verify otherwise.
The good news is you largely can't get them on Bloomberg either!
Return is only one dimension of the equation right? The people working there, the rigor of their investment process, the stickiness of capital, the culture, etc all play a role in this.
Back to your question, not every Bloomberg terminal has access to HF returns. If I recall correctly, one needs to subscribe to the HF database separately, which requires one to be an accredited investor or work in HF.
You can try Barclay Hedge for another source that has HF return, though not all funds report numbers there.
