Is there forced bucketing?

Just curious, when you get a review do you get your bucket told to you? Like "based on your performance, you're a middle/top/bottom bucket analyst"? Or do you just compare bonus numbers with other people to gauge?

Also do they hard-force buckets? Like if the class of 30 (for example) all were really good performers on everything, would they force 1/3rd of them to be Bottom bucket? Just curious in what people can control vs. the bucket they place in. Obviously this is an idealistic scenario assuming everyone performs like a top bucket, but just curious

My group ranks you out of 5 on technical and behavioral. If you get 5/5 for both, you are the best analyst (maybe 1/2 get it every few years and one guy helped source a deal...) 4/5 means top bucket, best bonus and great attitude, MDs like you. 3/5 on both, middle, possible upper middle if you get a 4 for behavioral anything below that is middle until you get to the 2s and 1s where you are def bottom bucket

I think it varies but generally there’s less discretion at the top than at the bottom e.g., there can only be one top bucket per group but if everyone’s great they don’t have to “punish” the least great person with bottom bucket.
