Is this a good cold email? Freshman Internship?
I know it's super late, but circumstances arose and now I have to find something last minute.
I have never done this before, so please tell me / edit heavily if it's garbage.
Thanks!
Dear _________,
I am currently studying Mathematics and Economics at _______ University. I am really interested in [PE/IB/AM/VC] and consequently in [THE COMPANY]. If there are any unpaid opportunities available at your firm, I would love to spend this summer working there to better my understanding of the industry and contribute where needed.
I have attached my resumé below. Thank you for your time!
Best,

Hello _______,
My name is _______ and I am currently (year in school) studying Mathematics and Economics at _______ University. Through my involvement / interest in ______, I have developed an interest in [PE/IB/AM/VC]. As I have been reading more about the industry I came across XYZ firm and am very interested for XYZ reason (you can farm off their website).
If there are any unpaid internships available at your firm for this summer, I would love to spend this summer contributing to the firm and learning more about the industry.
I have attached my resume below. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Best, XYZ
Wow so much better.
Thank you, I really appreciate it.
No problem. Best of luck.
If I was applying to a local botique firm would it be acceptable to say I am interested because I have lived in ____ for my whole life?
I would add in the times you are available to talk on the phone. It limits the back and forth and makes it easier for whoever you are reaching out to.
Thanks, that sounds like a good idea.
I'm a bit worried that I will come off as clueless over the phone. While I have a good GPA etc., I really know almost nothing about finance in general; I wanted to use this internship primarily to learn more about it. Do you think they'll expect me to be knowledgeable?
I agree with moldering. You need to google around, read books, and talk with friends, family, and upperclassmen. The main thing interviewers/professionals are looking for first is whether you actually have an interest. They will be able to gauge this quickly by how well you can speak about the topic and what kind of questions you ask.
Don't ask questions like "what is your firm's culture like". Better to ask someone: "I understand that Barclays' coverage groups differ from other banks because the execution is completed within the coverage groups and not necessarily M&A. Can you speak to that?"
When you ask a question, make it clear that you've done your homework about the subject, but are seeking to become more knowledgeable about whatever you are asking about.
WSO is a good place to start, but books like* Investment Banking *by R&P will help you get an understanding of what a banker does, and also how to prep for interviews and internships.
Everyone sounds clueless on the phone for their first ~dozen calls. Try to speak with older friends who have worked in the industry/read blogs or articles in advance of the call. Use networking calls to get an understanding of the industry and lingo, then use that knowledge later on during actual interviews.
Freshman internships are totally possible--cold-calling roles at PE shops are usually open to all years if you're sales-y enough. Best of luck.

I recommend trying to set up your first few calls in an industry that you aren't really interested in. My first few calls were all to wealth managers and I kinda thought I didn't want to do that so it was lower pressure.
