Is this HR lady right?
Had a call with the head of IBD recruiting a couple days ago at a BB in NY. Im a rising Junior by the way, so I am looking for an SA position.
She was very nice and gave some good info, but then she told me that I need to have leadership experience going into recruiting for that particular BB. I was in an executive role at my previous University's investment club, and I did that for a year (so my entire Soph year). I thought that would be sufficient enough for recruiting, but I guess she is implying that this position is too long ago, and she was encouraging me to take on a leadership role here, at my new University. Which, by the way, is impossible to do unless you were a general member for a certain amount of time. Then she was telling me to join a sports team or something of the equivalent. I dont really have time for that, as I am interning 25 hours per week at a middle market bank, which I explained to her.
Is her logic about having a "current" leadership role accurate? Let me know what you guys think
HR doesn't know anything. This may mean HR won't pass your resume on, but if you network with someone in IBD you'll be just fine.
Do recruiters even matter? I thought HR's role was to organize events and explain their bank's brand, then let the real people take over.

I am not a big fan of HR because they are so slow.
In most cases HR is the biggest block from you getting a job...Does not matter if her logic is right or wrong... she is calling the shots

I have never heard of this before. I think she is simply digging for something to tell you as a reason why you didn't make the cut. While it is true that HR does indeed do the first cut, they are not bankers.
However, the real reason is that there are simply so many extremely qualified people applying, and you were simply sifted out from the short list. I don't think it is worth it to get some "leadership" position just to pad your resume. Your internship at some bank is far more relevant and valuable. It doesn't matter that you were Head of your UNICEF club, because that's not what you are being hired to do. You are being hired to bite down and get the work done reliably and quickly without causing inconvenience to those around you.
I would recommend not reaching out to HR unless they are an alumni. Other than that, they aren't much help.
doesn't mean shit. if you have someone on the inside forward your resume with a recommendation, you have an extremely strong chance of interviewing (I've had interviews at all but one bank where I had someone on the inside recommend me).
Eh..more often than not, I found HR to be an annoying filter, difficult to get straight answers from. They are told what to do & do not control any purse strings. At the same time, I think this particular HR lady is giving you some constructive advice on how to make their short list. As kidflash mentioned above, you are miles ahead of the competition if you have a key insider who will push your name. All of my career stops can be attributed to an inside job, rather than going in cold from the outside.
While her delivery might have been lacking, she was giving you advice which you should mull over given that she is the head of IBD recruiting... She probably sees thousands of resumes a year and she told you exactly what you need to do to get your resume towards the top of the list. Don't complain about how you don't have time to do anything else. They want kids that can work 90+ hours a week and you're whining about school and an internship. Think about how that sounds to her...
