if it fits well, it really doesn't matter which brand, especially as an intern. Just don't wear a backpack with a suit, bad look (Mormon)

Make sure the your wso/">shirt matches with color of your suit and the tie as well. If you can pick up some wso/">suits at a bargain store that look nice and fit well, you will look way better wearing a $100 suit than some dumbass who's wearing a $2000 suit that doesn't fit or is an ugly color.

I am going to have to disagree strongly. Roll into that place like a fucking pymp and let them know who runs shit.

No, obviously don't wear loud colors or tacky, shinny ass $800 shoes. But, if you (or more likely your parents) have the paper around, I'd say go and buy yourself a nice suit from Boss, Canali, etc... nothing flashy, but something nice ($1,000-$1,500). For the first week or so wear pretty basic colors/shoes, but after you've established a rep with those around you you can through in some loafs if it's business-casual (no blue suede Todds with colored lining, but perhaps some black without bling ferragamo's, etc...)

people don't not hire you because you're cool.

Geez, do not take fashion or life advice from someone named "International Pymp". It does not matter what brand your suit is - you're a intern for god's sakes. Jos A Bank is just fine. Trust me, nobody expects you to be rolling in cash as a college student, and they don't blame you for spending your limited spare change on kegs of Natty Lite. Looking flashy will make you look like a douche. And leave the contrast collars and french cuffs at home as well.

There is a Nordstrom in paramus NJ that always has nice suits on sale, I got a couple of Bosses for $400-$600 and a versace for $1400.00 they also have sick Zegna ties for around $200

"The higher up the mountain, the more treacherous the path" -Frank Underwood

Go to Nordstrom Rack or Off Sak's and buy one navy and one grey suit. Get them altered there at the store - wear a button down and dress shoes there so you know it fits properly. With $800 or so you can probably get a pair of nice Boss or Abboud suits that will be flexible (navy and grey go with everything) and reasonably priced.

For shirts, don't spend more than $30-40 apiece. Either wait for a sale at Brooks Brothers or even just go to somewhere like Express and grab some solid blues, whites and pinks. Any summer buying RLPL shirts or Zegna ties will look like a tool or be wasting money when they don't have much to begin with.

Attention Monkeys:

Alton Lane (www.altonlane.com) in the Flatiron District.

You can get a custom suit for under $500.

Custom shirts are $75.

Custom pants are $89.

Great quality, colors, and service.

Run by former bankers who left to start their own biz.

Your measurements take 30 seconds because they use a computerized body scanner.

Anyone who buys off the rack clothes is a fool and wasting money.

These clothes will fit so well. You will be disgusted with the parachute-style Brooks Brothers crap you've been schlepping around.

Oh, and for the prestige whores: when I was picking up a few shirts the other day at Alton Lane, a group of Goldman MDs were picking out suits and winter coats.

I'd also check out Century 21; I've found some good suits there around $400 - you just need to know which brands are quality and which aren't. No one is going to give a fuck what suit you wear though - it will spend 95% of the day hanging on the back of a chair or a coat rack.

What you should worry about it getting good shoes, because those can not only last a while, they will make you seriously uncomfortable if you get something shitty.

Go with a solid color plain fabric with a slim notch lapel that is modern, not trendy. At the end of the day a successful intern is one that the elders can relate too, and it's hard to relate to a young intern who dresses poorly... -Richard

BB is more than enough, kind of even overkill for a rising soph... Don't start spending big cash on suits for a few more years. Any good brand name (Ralph Lauren etc) that you can find in Macy's will do. Jos. A Bank also has some deals around this time of year which might be more in your price range.

For a rising sophomore I'd suggest Jos Bank. Sometimes they have deals like 3 suits two shirt and two ties for the price of one suit, and they fit well enough and last a while.

I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

Do they wear suits out west?

You might be better served buying some hoodiesdrug rugs, hemp necklaces, cargo shorts, and flip flops

Hahaha, who really knows! Maybe I'll get a suit tailored out of hemp.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! :)

Grey, Navy Blue.

Jos. A Bank is a bit more common than BB, but both are fine. Don't get pleated trousers, and don't get cuffs that roll up at the bottom. No, you won't grow another inch anymore. Sorry. Get it tailored, probably not by the in house tailor at a JAB, they are awful. BB you might be ok. And make sure they don't put you in a suit a size too big. If you have a salesman that is an older American (think in his 50's or 60's) there is a really high chance that he'll put you in a suit that doesn't fit you well. This is because everyone with taste who is in their 50's or 60's is not a salesman at a JAB.

Good luck.

Jos A. Bank, Men's Warehouse, and Brooks Brothers (more on the expensive side) aren't bad. Depending on what your signing bonus was, I'd get at least 2 suits maybe 3. Jos A. Bank and Men's Warehouse may not have great durability since the quality isn't exactly Armani, but for the next 2 years it'll get the job done. Brooks Brothers is slightly more expensive, but there may be discounts. Since nobody gives a crap what brand an SA wears, I'd spend around $300-$500 including all the tailoring and accessories. If it matters to you that much, you could buy a nice $600-$800 suit for yourself for meetings or things of that sort. I personally think it's not worth it since in this day and age suits don't get promotions.

Safest color for one is navy. Black pinstripe or grey would be good for the other. Don't buy a cream suit. That's like wearing the MD shirt. As long as your suits fit, nobody really gives where they're from if you're an SA.

Go to Brooks Brothers. Starting Sunday, their semi-annual sale begins. You can get their 1818 Collection for ~$700 each, down from $900. Look into the Milano or Fitzgerald fits, those are their most slender and youthful. I'm going to advise that you stay away from J.A.B. They are pretty crummy, to be honest. I don't know your financial situation or the environment you're working in, but a good starter suit is an investment in your future. Step up a bit for your first one, and get other ones that you can rely on to build out your closet.

I am permanently behind on PMs, it's not personal.

Go to MySuit on Madison if you're in NYC. Their super 120's cost about 600 dollars. I recently just got a suit that fit me like a glove. You probably won't go back to wearing off the rack suits once you try a tailored suit. If you want to get a really nice suit and have upwards of 800 dollars to blow (which you don't seem to have) then you should try Michael Andrew's Bespoke or Louis Purple.

I got a Louis Purple suit to go out in, and I get complimented by both men and women all the time.

I recommend Enzo's. You'll get a completely custom suit, plus a custom shirt, plus a tie for approximately $615.

When I say custom, I mean custom. You effectively get to pick everything about the suit from the buttons to the thread color of the patch with your name on the inside of the jacket.

I will never purchase off the rack clothing again.

Okay, it is not your classic "navy blue." In my opinion, its even better. Dark navy's look black from a distance. I see people wearing these suits all the time in Manhattan with light brown/tan shoes and matching belt. Looks very clean. Would take it over a "classic navy" suit any day.

Of course it looks cool - wouldn't buy it otherwise ;) , just worried that it's too brash for an intern. I have no idea how conservative the MDs at my firm are - wouldnt want to look like a fool!

Thank you for your replies though

If you are only looking for 1-2 suits, go for a classic navy blue or classic charcoal grey (both look black from a distance, interestingly).

If you can afford to get a few more pairs of suits, pick this one up too - it's a great color that goes with both black and brown shoes and is pretty versatile. But, yes, it is not as conservative as the other two colors.

seedy underbelly:

Curious to hear from others about this: Which of the following two would y'all buy?

A: http://www.indochino.com/product/the-premium-itali...

B: http://www.indochino.com/product/The-Essential-Nav...

I'd go with A if money/budget is not an issue. I personally am actually planning to buy B, due to budget constraints. Both look like great options though, made from 100% wool and lined with bemberg instead of plain old poly.

Attention to detail is important in finance and you'll inevitably have superficial guys judging you. Source: I judge people for superficial reasons. In my opinion, you should not wear a pleated and cuffed suit for your internship.

I don't have the answer to your tailoring question, but I would suggest posting it somewhere else for an answer; reddit.com/r/malefashionadvice would probably answer this question quickly. Also consider trying Styleforum.

If you're gonna need a new suit, I'd recommend J.Crew Factory's Thompson Suit. On sale you should be able to grab one for around $200, and they run sales all the time. It is truly slim-fitting and stylish.

"A modest man, with much to be modest about"

Tailoring of that level will be so expensive you might as well we'll get a new suit. You also need at least 2 suits I case one is at the cleaners when a client visits the office. Navy Blue and Charcoal.

Hopefully an actual professional comes along to give you advice, but as far as I know, as long as it isn't black or too bold, it's pretty much fine. Navy and gray are popular choices.

Looks sharp. Get it tailored appropriately and for the love of God don't get the pants tailored any shorter than the model on the site.

I'm gonna have to second this.

Fortes fortuna adiuvat.

TTB covered most of it. Light pinstripes are ok with solid shirt/tie. Flat front pants. Send all your double-breasted suits over to Salvation Army. The word you are looking for is tailored. And no fucking square-toed shoes.

alright thanks for the tips I think I know what I am leaning towards now with what I am going to get fitted for myself.

Also to the haters out there...Im not going to rock the double breasted to work obviously, but in a more casual setting Id rock it in a heartbeat cant out do the badassness of the double breast plus they have swag for days.

No...just no. Maybe for an 80's party or halloween.

Great. Thanks :) I personally like it really much too. But sometimes I find the rules what to wear in IB and what not a bit weird. The last time a analyst also said to me "No brown in town". Because I was wearing brown shoes to a navy suit..
