IS to a small developer - concerned about exit ops

Hey guys as title says I've been in investment sales for 2 years. I have an opportunity with a lean local developer that has been around for 15+ years. They started out as a GC and grew into development with projects ranging in the $10-40mm range and are active (4-5 projects going on at this time).

My concern is exit ops, due to their background it's more blue collar although they do raise a good amount of institutional money for deals it will never be a Related/Blackstone etc. If my goal is to be in NYC at a large/name brand developer in 2 years - some are very institutional (Related) and others are large owner/developers with a certain pedigree (think Shvo, RFR, JDS top schools). How would this smaller developer experience line me up when the firm is outside NY, would I have to go get a Master's to land at some of these firms or is experience experience?
