Isn’t the problem no gratuity?
There are lots of posts in this forum about a lot of issues and mental health problems etc. And the toxic culture etc etc.
Whilst it’s possible (or even true) that the culture is toxic, and personal hours and that respected in the industry, doesn’t some of the problem lie with the people In it?
That is, I feel like there is a constant comparison (natural in humans), to people on the ‘other side’ (PE, HF) and this makes us dissatisfied with our current situation, so we get upset and sad. Same with salary. So many posts about ‘bad’ 150k bonuses etc. This is due to comparison with people who earn more, then leads to lack of gratuity with the extremely high salary a person has.
Constant dissatisfaction and constant disappointment are what will keep occurring if people just keep comparing, and this just makes things worse for the individual and exacerbates and existing toxic issues or mentality that are in banking.
After having worked in multiple industries, the worst I have met were almost always in banking/financial services. Comparing yourself to others is only one aspect. Being around money all day long and talking about it may devalue it (we throw around millions and billions like it is candy). Once you get used to a six-figure salary in your 20s, how could one ever think the national average salary is acceptable?
When you live and work in the financial centers of the world, everyone around you seems to feel like they are special.
