Jefferies M&A

What does Jefferies M&A look like compared to street? Exit ops? Deal flow?

I really like M&A work, I did a corp dev role doing some acquisition research last summer. I know that Healthcare and LevFin are their top groups but I really have my heart set on M&A if I get the chance during placements (SA)

Any insights are appreciated!

Not entirely educated on Jefferies but know some thing, so take this with a grain of salt. I feel that they have a good reputation. A lot of people leave the firm to join PE, I would say the Jefferies name in PE is rather prominent - not like GS, CS, JPM but people definitely know it. Have heard from people I know in the company that the deal flow might be a little inconsistent. That doesn't mean bad, just very unpredictable, although it totally depends on your group. Don't be fooled by Rich Handlers posts on finance instagram pages and think its the greatest environment to be in tho, Jefferies is hard fucking core and you might have a hard time differentiating it from Nike's warehouses in Bangladesh.

Worked at Jefferies before lateraling so can provide some insight. M&A is a great group at Jefferies. The group runs quite lean, and dealflow is strong, so you'll definitely get your reps in but the group is quite sweaty. However, some of the groups at Jefferies do their M&A in-house. Healthcare and Tech largely run their M&A modeling in-house, and many Industrials verticals also do so, and some of them like ADG have specialized M&A bankers embedded within the groups since they're run out of regional offices.

Exit ops are solid. I'm a firm believer that aside from the top banks (GS/MS/Evercore/etc), whose analysts get additional looks from HH based on their name alone, PE recruiting is much more dependent on analyst strength than bank. Every year the select top candidates across groups at Jefferies place into MFs and UMM, while the vast majority of candidates place well into MM PE. A lot of seniors at Jefferies (not sure about M&A) are very open about PE recruiting as well.

Good group but definitely the sweatiest at the bank - probably even more so than healthcare.
