Job Search Advice - Senior at a non-target
Hey guys, I am currently a senior at a non-target University and had a couple of questions:
*On my resume, which I have not updated since the end of the Spring 2013 semester, I have my listed University and three part time jobs, all of them basically irrelevant to IB (food markets, restaurants, you get the point)
Over the summer, I did a part time internship at MS, and I am obviously planning on adding it. I feel like listing my internship and three irrelevant jobs(and the fourth one I have now, which is also at a restaurant) would not only be a little overkill, but would also push my resume to two pages, which I hear isn't the best idea. What are your thoughts?
*Also, when would be the best time to start applying to large/small firms as a senior undergraduate? Is October considered Too early? Too late for certain firms?
Hope I made everything clear, thanks for the help.
What kind of job are you looking for? Definitely only one page résumé. Stress what's most important. You didn't receive a return offer from MS?
No:/ It wasn't an official "summer analyst position", it was at one of their Smith Barney satellite offices. I actually ended up working directly under one of their senior wealth advisers, working at a desk right outside his office. I was looking to be a financial adviser at the time, but I think I'm definitely leaning towards an analyst position as of now. I feel like it would be a little unrealistic for me to shoot for a wealth management position right out of the gate anyways, I feel as if those positions are for veterans who have built a client/networking base over the years.
If PWM is "unrealistic", than what is? What do you mean by "analyst position"? Analyst where? IBD? Operations? IT? Be specific in what you are shooting for.
IBD, Equity Research
I'm still a little confused as to why you think PWM is unrealistic but IB and ER are on the table. You don't need your own book of clients to start working there in a junior role. With your school and experience it's likely it will be extremely tough to secure a job in the divisions you want. Use your school's OCR. Don't do a two page résumé, cut out the earlier/more irrelevant restaurant stuff if you have to.
My conclusion about PWM was pretty much based off my experience at my internship; it seemed like I was at least 8-10 years younger than their youngest FT employee...I probably should have figured it wasn't the same way at other WM offices. I was leaning towards a one page resume as well; I felt like listing the half dozen part time jobs I had in the past would have been a waste of time for myself and my whoever was reviewing my resume.
I understand where you are coming from. PWM is an old mans game. Yes, you can be successful at a young age but the more gray hair you have the easier it's going to be for you.
