Jobs to build skills for ER

I know a lot of people move to ER from investment banking, but I was wondering what jobs would also be good to build the skills for equity research

I’m a sophomore at a non target with not the best gpa, but I have time to bring it back up. In case I don’t land a solid gig in IB or ER right out of graduation, what jobs would be good to build experience? Would a financial analyst role be good? I want to build experience, get into a good mba program, get a CFA then proceed to ER as my backup plan. What do you guys think? Thanks.

Tbh you could skip the MBA program, and just take level 1 as a senior or right after graduation. That should be enough to get you a couple interviews, given that you pass.

Do your own initiation pieces, backed up with your own models. Find a coverage sector(s) that you like and go for it. You could start doing this now, it'd be a great thing to be able to show when you apply for internships. I started my own website and have published a few pieces, and it's helped me get nearly every interview that I've had over the past couple months.

Hey man - I started working post-grad in consulting, and moved to equity research at a mutual fund. The thing that I personally love about building a skillset for ER is that it's extremely accessible to all. I.E., anyone can write a report and build the model. This is exactly what you need to be doing.

The key to breaking in to equity research is writing multiple research reports and full models. The best thing you can do is work on this for a sector you're interested in and network with  a covering analyst,
