Joe Biden - why is he still the democratic front runner?
Watched some highlights from the debate the other day. I hate to say it but Joe Biden is an incoherent old man with Alzheimer’s. He can’t even string two sentences together, but according to all the polling data he is still the front runner for President. If he’s clearly losing his mental facilities now, where would he be in 2029 after two terms? He’s not raising funds nearly as well as Sanders or Pete Bootypegged, and has zero youth support. With that in mind, why the actual fuck is an old man with Alzheimer’s still the front runner for Democrats? “Electability”? Black people in South Carolina who associate him with Obama? I really don’t get it.
Honestly don't have answer for this one. Maybe it's because all of the other candidates are so radical and unhinged that he seems more mild compared to them, but on the other hand, as you said, who would want a man for president that can't remember what he said just 5 minutes before?
I am as surprised as you are that Biden is the front runner or one of them. I also have concerns about his age and just can't get excited about anyone that old running for POTUS, unless that person has a great resume. For example, I would consider voting for Bloomberg but not Biden.
Bloomberg (or any other billionaire) has no chance in hell with today’s Democratic Party
I do not think that Bloomberg's billions would be the main reason dems would not vote for him. I know a lot of dems who would vote for him. I think that getting into the race at this late point would be a more important reason.
I look forward to seeing Alzheimers and Dementia battle it out on the debate stage
And you just answered the OP question. By far the biggest voting bloc is the retired age. Someone with those mental issues like Trump or Biden don't seem that outlandish to them, they see it all the time.
A couple reasons:
Name recognition. When there are 20348234213 candidates to choose from, and you only casually follow the race, Biden's an easy choice for a poll.
Democratic voters don't reflect liberal twitter. AOC and Sanders might get all the glory, both from the left because their supporters are loud and from the right because they're effective boogeymen, but most of the Democratic party isn't the next Karl Marx.
Biden has a stutter. A lot of times when he looks "confused," he's actually fighting through that. There's a great article about it somewhere - the Atlantic maybe.
Trump isn't exactly a bastion of sounding intelligent when he talks or looking lucid and engaged in public.
I tend to agree with you on Biden (and Sanders, and Trump for that matter) being far too old for the presidency and I too think that Biden looks and sounds far too old for this moment. I also don't think he'll win the nomination in the end - but you never know. He is polling something like 70% among black voters - an important voting block of the Democratic party. It's not even close, even with two black candidates in the race.
