JP Morgan - Oil Market Research thoughts?

Hello there,

I'm in the fortunate position to consider a role at JP Morgan's Oil Market Research Team. I was hoping someone could provide some colour on the team. Does anyone have any experience with them and any thoughts? What could potential exits from this group look like (physical trade house, commodities hedge fund, supermajor?)

I always find their research and commentary to be pretty bland.  Never anything other than "well the market moved so we are adjusting our forecast to be more in line with the market" type analysis.  pretty weak.  Although, Abashek is pretty fun to sit with at dinner.

This isn't specific to JPM Oil, but IME, bank research used to be a tool to offer access to high-level individuals for clients.  The client would pay the bank in terms fo fees or sales credits for the privilege.  With a large separation of those roles, it's getting harder and harder to justify the research biz, since most of the views aren't particularly nuanced or useful.  I think sell-side research is really on the way out over the next 5-10 years, so it's something to consider if you're starting your career there.
