Help! JP Morgan Investment Banking Video Interview Questions?

I just got offered a J.P. Morgan - Video Interview. What should I expect? This is what was stated in the email. "As mentioned previously, we would like to give you the opportunity to tell us more about yourself and invite you to record video responses to 3 questions."

Please let me know on how to proceed and on how to prepare. Do you know if they ask specific video interview questions? Do you have any general video interview tips? Something like a top 10 interview questions and answers list to the JP Morgan hirevue interview?

Thank you so much.

Investment Banking Video Interview Questions?

If you're at the video interview portion of your internship application process this most likely means you've passed the initial screen application screen (i.e., GPA) and phone interview. This video interview is likely the only thing standing between you and the Superday. And just like any other aspect of the application process, there are known details you should know and prepare for in advance.

In regards to the video interviews, the general consensus from the WSO Community suggests that the video interviews tend to have some similarities regardless of the firm you're applying to. The 2 main aspects you need to plan for are:

  1. The Video Interview Structure, and;
  2. The Questions

Hirevue and Yello Format

  • 3-4 Questions
  • 60 seconds to prepare your response
  • 60-90 seconds to deliver your response
  • A couple retakes to submit your video after reviewing your response
The whole process should take somewhere between 20-30 min depending on the amount of time you use in the above steps.

Hirevue and Yello Questions

In regards to the questions, there is no list of known questions that you can plan for but there some topics that frequently come up. You can prepare for each by knowing some of the common questions that fall in each bucket. Having your answers to the below questions should definitely increase your chances of making it to the next round.

Behavioral

These questions tend to focus on your actions in the past. They look to assess how you have behaved in the past and whether or not you have the requisite skills and personality to succeed in the firm.

** Questions that prior video interviewees have been asked are

  • Why JPM?
  • Why IB?
  • Describe a situation where you had to collaborate with a difficult colleague
  • Give an example of how you've worked on a team.

Situational

These questions tend to focus on how you would behave in the future via a hypothetical situation. These questions will assess your problem solving ability and how you might handle difficult circumstances in the future.

**Questions you might run into

  • If you know your boss is 100% wrong about something how would you handle it?
  • Where do you see yourself in five years' time?
  • You have 10 minutes before you're due to give a presentation. What do you do?

Technical

Lastly, you have the technical questions. This is purely to assess your knowledge and/or intelligence. The questions can very from defining finance terminology, to current world events/market trends, or

** Questions you might run into

  • What's WACC and how do you calculate it?
  • Name me two companies that you think should consider merging. Why?
  • How would you value an established industrials company vs. a tech start-up? Why?
  • What's the Treasury Stock Method?
  • Why would you or would you not invest in Apple?
  • What is the Dow Jones Industrial Average/FTSE as of today's opening bell?
  • Walk me through a DCF

Any update for your IB app? I'm at the same stage.

Nope no update. Haven't even received an email from them confirming that they're still reviewing apps

10/10/17

Update: I just got my MM video invite today, 10 days after applying. Anyone else? What are the questions like?

10/10/17

Just wondering if you go to Target school? Did you network with them before applying?

10/10/17

Semi-target, no networking besides speaking with recruiter a little at career fair. Also applied through my school career services site

10/9/17

I did my JPM GTM video interview yesterday. The process is simple but questions are elaborated. All behaviour. 2 trials per question.

10/9/17

I applied to the Risk Management internship and Asset Management internship for NY in the beginning of August. For RM, I got the video interview right away and completed it. Over the last 2 months, I've gotten the "your application is still in review and you will be notified soon" for RM. For AM, they never contacted me until last week, asking for a video interview. When is super day and what does this all mean?

10/10/17

Just got an S and T phone Interview after completing the Hirevue on August 10th.

10/10/17

Do u go to a target?

10/10/17

No, NYC non-target

10/10/17

I did my video interview by August 10th and just did a phone call screen today. Was told from there I will be notified if I make it to first round and then from there if I make superday. They seem to be towards the end of the process but not finished yet.

10/11/17

is this for SF?

10/10/17

So earlier today I received an invite to do a video interview for MMBSI by Friday, and even just a couple hours ago, the application status stayed as "Application in review." But now, the status is showing up as "Interview - 1st Round," even though I haven't done my video interview yet. Nothing is showing up under My Schedule, My Interviews, or My Invitations yet, though. Does anyone know what this means??? Does the video interview count as 1st Round for MMBSI?

10/11/17

Yes, the video itself is considered a first round. Got the same one.

10/15/17

Got it. Do you know if they were more selective in offering video interviews for MMBSI than for CIB? Also have you heard back about second round/superday yet?

10/16/17

Not sure. Do you know whats the difference between MMBSI and Corporate Client Banking & Specialized Industries? Got an interview for both but not really sure what the difference is between the two.

10/11/17

I see my status on Yello changed to "Interview - 2nd Round" yesterday for CIB Markets, is that supposed to be a superday invite? I haven't received any information, do I need to contact HR?

10/11/17

Mine changed to that as well and then the next day I got an email that I got a superday so look out for that email!

10/11/17

Alright, thank you! Hopefully they send me the info soon lol very anxious

10/11/17

@Hokiebaster btw the email you got with info about superday, was that from a recruiter or was that one of those automatically generated emails?

10/16/17

Automatically generated from JP recruitment team

10/12/17

When did you apply?

10/12/17

@Metmat05 applied mid summer and was the first batch to submit video by august 10th or whenever that was

10/12/17

Target?

10/16/17

@Street123 I am from non-target but in a exclusive investment group that is a target for BB

10/11/17

I got an email from someone to hop on a quick phone call for 30 minutes to discuss my interests for the markets program and firm. Is that what people got as well or was it a computerized email about Super-day?

10/12/17

Have they even gotten to people who applied towards the deadline (mid September) regardless of target or non-target?

10/12/17

I don't think so. I applied mid September and I've only done the video interview and application status says under review. I'm non-target. Did anyone else receive an email last week thanking you for your patience and telling you your application was under review?

10/12/17

My application status is also still under review. But I still haven't even received that email yet lol, guess that isn't a great sign

10/12/17

Have you done the video interview?

10/12/17

For CIB yes. like two weeks ago

10/12/17

I did the video interview about 3 weeks ago so I wouldn't worry about not receiving an email yet.

10/12/17

I did video interview around 3 weeks ago and haven't gotten an email about that, App still says under review. I also know people that got that email but still haven't been invited for Video Interview yet. Plus, I talked to my contact at JP today said he still likes my chances at a super day, so I'm not sure that email means much.

10/12/17

yep. got the same email.

10/12/17

If you don't mind me asking what departments did you apply to?

10/12/17

I applied to CIB.

10/12/17

Yea but what departments, like I applied to CIB Investment Banking, CIB Markets, and CIB Treasury.

10/12/17

CIB Investment Banking and CIB Risk

10/12/17

Thanks.

10/15/17

I got the same email and now my status is suddenly 'application in review' and not 'application under review'. I thought they already had an SA class. Why are things still changing?

10/15/17

Yeah mine also changed from "application under review" to "application in review." I don't know what this means.

10/15/17

Mine just changed to " in review" today

10/15/17

Maybe it just means they're getting to our video interviews now?

10/16/17

I think that's the most reasonable interpretation depending when you did the video interivew,(I did mine 3 weeks ago).

10/16/17

Mine has also changed to "in review". I have gotten no communications from them post video interview,(which I did about about three weeks ago).

10/15/17

Did anybody who applied to the Houston or Dallas Offices for Markets here back after the video interview?

10/15/17

Still waiting

10/15/17

What is going on with this? Are they having IB superdays right now? Does anyone know anything?

10/15/17

They are having an IB superday tomorrow.

10/15/17

Has anyone had a superday for MMBSI yet? Also, I got an email from JPM a couple hours after I completed the video interview saying

"Congratulations once again for being selected to participate in first round pre-recorded video interviews... You should have received an email regarding further details for your pre-recorded video interview. If you do not see this email in your inbox, please check your spam and junk folders."

Has anyone else gotten this?

10/16/17

What's the best way to check application status?

10/17/17

Go to https://jpmc.recsolu.comand login. Your application status should be under the "my applications" section.

10/16/17

Anyone who did the IB superday today hear back yet?

10/17/17

Any updates?

10/18/17

does anyone know for sure if "Interview - 2nd Round" means phone call or super day?

10/18/17

this is for Investor Services - Sales btw

10/27/17
10/18/17

Anybody here receive any updates about the Sophomore Asset & WM SA, or the CIB Risk Management SA? I'm still "application under review" for both after submitting the online hirevue for CIB Risk early August - nothing at all from AM/WM. I'm non-target

10/18/17

CIB Risk superday - November 3rd (Non - Target)

10/18/17

Interesting. Hopefully I'm still in the run! It would suck to be dinged before getting to speak to a human smh

10/18/17

Do you know when the CIB Investment Banking superday is for Non-Target?

10/18/17

There were some non- target kids at the Monday superday. I'm not sure if there'll be another one specifically for non targets.

10/25/17

How would you distinguish a CIB Investment Banking superday for Non-Targets to one for Targets?

10/27/17

yeah, interviewed with an executive director in their PWM out of the palo alto office yesterday--said I was a good fit. I'd reach out to the team, being proactive has always seemed to work in my favor.

10/20/17

So Im in a pretty f**ked up situation. I applied in early August, I did my video interview some time after that. I think it was due on the 16th of august. On October 11th, I got an email for a phone interview and I did that. I think it all went well. I am a sophomore from a non target. I have two consulting internships and a hedge fund. I haven't heard back since the phone interview. I applied for S&T and im not sure if I should be worried. Its been some time now.

10/20/17

You are in a good place. Still have not heard anything about even a second round yet.

10/20/17

So there will be a phone interview after the video one? I haven't heard anything yet.

10/20/17

How long does it take for them to get back about a second round for MMBSI?

10/20/17

Applied for 3 positions (WM, GTM, Markets) and did the hirevues for all 3. Despite continuously getting the same email about being still being considered I havent gotten a phone interview or anything, pretty sure I wont be hearing good news from JPM

10/20/17

When did you apply?

10/20/17

July/August

10/20/17

So me and my friend both submitted the video interview for CIB-IBD on early-mid September. We just havent heard back any followups since then. I only got an email about they are screening my application. I feel like if you havent gotten anything back by now, is a bad sign, isn't it?

10/21/17

I believe they just started reviewing those applications, people who submitted application by August 15th deadline did not get super day invite until last week. I think you'll be notified in 2-3 weeks.
