Judgment?
Hello Monkeys. I have a question for bankers that have actually been on the other side of the interview process, and every opinion would be appreciated.
Is it a good idea to mention that you’re a first generation college student in your story? Alumni have always said that I should mention this because it makes me stand out, but they might be biased. As I’ve gone through recruiting I’ve slowly begun to think that this is a bad thing to mention seeing as how some of my interviews have gone, and that it might even brand me as less desirable.
I’m beginning to feel like interviewers sometimes grill me on harder questions/weird behaviorals to see if I’m “as capable” as other candidates. I’ve never had anyone ask further questions about it in interviews so it’s not much of a talking point either.

It comes across to me as looking for sympathy if you say you're first-generation and that's it. Now, if you said you're first-gen and you had to work a job to support your family or pay tuition, that tells me you have grit and work ethic, which makes you a stronger candidate in my mind.
This. Also, it shouldnt be a huge part of your story. If thats what you focus on rather than why youre interested in finance and IB, theyre gonna find a way to make sure you actually know what youre interviewing for. You gotta know your shit either way, your story isnt a free pass
Thank you both for your input. It was just something I'd offhandedly mention. So maybe clarifying and saying something like "I'm a first-generation college student, so in high school I worked to help support my family and was able to save up enough for college" or something?
