Jump from GS Operations to Consulting Possible?

Hey guys,

New to the forum here, so I want to give a little bit of background about me before I dig into this. I just graduated from a large state school with a major in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Economics, and will be starting a FT position in GS's Irving office within Regulatory Operations.

I must admit I am a bit shellshocked at the perception that most of y'all have towards those in Ops positions. Now, I knew that when I accepted my offer it wasn't going to be the most challenging job in the world, but some of the posts on here make it seem like I might make better use of my time flipping burgers at Carl's Jr.

With that being said, I want to know if it is possible to land a role in either MC or TC at any sized consulting firm or even a position within Advisory at one of the Big 4, given that I will be starting out my career in GS Ops. I do get the impression that certain skills in Operations would be transferable to a consulting role, which is a good thing because as far as communication skills I think I'm pretty solid in that department.

A seperate question that I have is if Regulatory Operations is looked at more or less favorablely than other functions within Ops? I know certain roles within the BO hold more value than others, and I just want to know if what I will be doing is one of them.

I know this is a super long post, and really broad, but any input would be greatly appreciated! Cheers.

Most definitely possible. Actually, it shouldn't be that difficult. Most likely your hours will be between 45-50, so you will have plenty of time to network after hours. Network tremendously to get your foot in the door. I would say give yourself about 8-10 months into your gig before you start applying. And to answer your other question regarding Reg Ops, to be blunt with you, no, they are not viewed favorably as other Ops roles. You'll essentially be reading and pulling reports for other teams. Although we can say that Ops roles are still support functions in the end, there are certain roles in Ops where you get way more exposure to the business that could be more favorable. (e.g. middle office derivatives)

Don't worry about your role right now - just kill it and learn as much as possible.
