Jumping Ship Early - Do or Don't?
My fellow monkeys,
I come here to seek your advice. Let me start by saying I busted my ass off to land a role during these times and I know how lucky I am to be in my position. Now let me next say that I knew the job would come at the expense of my personal life, but I wasn't aware that it would come at the expense of my health.
I hit the desk a few months ago and it has been an absolute grind. I'm talking 9-3/4 AM every night and no weekends off (11-11 PM +/-). I've started to lose my hair, gain weight (no time to exercise at all), and develop insane migraines from the weekly all-nighter and general lack of sleep. Today was probably the worst day yet as I started to randomly get extreme waves of nausea. I don't think I can do this any more and luckily have an open ended offer to join the strategy team of a reputable firm.
My question to you: how bad does it look for me to quit now? will I get blacklisted from non-banking roles? what advice do you have for me? I don't care about the money anymore and I just want to be able to sleep and not have to witness my body deteriorate.
Bump
Talk to your staffer, if they don’t help, leave the next day. No job (yes, IB is a job) is worth your health.
There seems to be a direct correlation between the amount of times I push back and the number of times I get CC'ed on RfPs
leave. If they don’t respect you despite working hard, they never will. People have the best opportunity during Covid to get out of a shit job, because you can always explain away an unusually short job stint
What kind of bank does this to you? Any chance of pushing back?
Sorry I don't want to be specific but I can say that it is not a jpm/gs/ms. Pushing back does not seem to work
If you have another offer, take it and don't look back. Is it optimal for career progression to leave so soon? Probably not, but life doesn't work out perfectly. I doubt in 10 years, you'll be thinking about how you left your first job after 6 months. Your body and mind will thank you.
bump, what are thoughts on pushing back as a 1st year analyst?
Health should always come first! Talk to your staffer and if he says no, I would definitely take the other offer. Those hours are absolutely crazy. Can you go into a little more detail on type of bank this is?
Did you intern with this group and if so, was it that way last year?
I did not but heard it was the same
what kind of a fucking sweatshop works you that hard. This sounds extreme even for Moelis
Bump
If you don't see it getting better in the next 1-2 years, I'd jump ship to another bank.
Got a JPM FIG vibe here
Is it possible to just stop doing a good amount of the work (like sleeping 7 hrs no matter what or similar) and just start recruiting for other jobs? Usually non-boutiques and even most boutiques don't fire analysts, just don't give them a third year offer.
I've explored this option and it is unfortunately not feasible without suffering serious repercussions
You’re implying ~115-hr weeks every week?
Yes, between 100-120 including weekends since I first started :(
Bro/Gal please for the rest of us let us know which shite group this is so we can avoid it
