Junior Analyst Watch Thought?

Hi all. Debating on a first entry level luxury watch for graduation. I've heard mixed thoughts ranging from you can't wear something too nice to the office as a junior analyst, to, people don't really care because they could afford it if they wanted to. Is it unacceptable to wear a nice watch to the office? Depends on the place? Or other. I've strayed away from used Rolex's because I don't want to give off a silver spoon kid impression. Would a Tudor Blackbay or Omega Seamaster be more acceptable? I'm actually into watches and am not looking to get something just as a status symbol, but I don't want to have it giving off any bad impressions etc. Likely working in AM or IB at a NYC middle market bank if it makes any difference.

Almost everyone won’t care, like everything else there is also a risk someone judges you for it, but people who judge on that would also judge you based on clothing, where you live, your wallet, a million different things. It isn’t worth to worry about it, if you have worked hard and can afford it and want to use your money that way go ahead. Most people won’t notice it at all and watch fans will probably just talk with you about it if they do notice.

Of the two brands you mention I’m a bigger fan of omega. I personally think pre owned with watches, from a reputable dealer, is the way to go. Depending on your budget you can start finding some very solid pieces at a nice discount used.

I wouldn’t worry about it, you are going to a major financial hub in a high paying industry. I’ve been in the industry for long time and I love watches, and as a senior person I would appreciate a watch more than think someone is spoiled. At the end of the day your work is what speaks for itself. As I said before, people who don’t know watches won’t be able to tell the difference between omega and fossil (I’m cartooning it, but the price difference won’t register). Just don’t get a diamond encrusted watch.

If you want watch recommendations at a certain price point feel free to ask (or pm me).

Hi there - I'd love some recommendations :) Looking to buy my first watch to start an IB analyst job with some money saved up from my internship. Price range is around 1000-1500 but I'm flexible. Thanks for your help!

At that budget it is tough, but my top recommendation would probably be a pre-owned Nomos Glashutte. You can find them right at the top of your budget through you reputable dealer and probably get a bit of a discount (especially right now).

They have high quality watches and in house movements, their prices have jumped a bit recently but should be fine. Also I am a fan of the simplistic design and think it pairs well with casual and dressed up environments, but others might not be a fan of the design.

They are less recognizable than tag, but I think a comparison is unfair from a quality perspective as Nomos is a better product. It just depends if you want “brand recognition”.

I tried finding some omegas or IWC at that price but a bit tough.

If you are looking for something new I would take a look at Tissot, Fredrick Constant, Baume & Mercier. Take a look at www.jomashop.com.

I had a pre-owned Junghans back in college in Europe and still wear it on my wrist - those who are not into watches, simply don't care, and from those, who are into them, I always get compliments on my watch. My watch has actually helped me in networking with 'big guys' couple times, who were interested why I chose an old reputable German manufacturer over the standard options.

Take a mechanical Tissot and don't overcomplicate it imho.

God I love watch threads. The 3 watches I think look great on an analyst are Breitling navitimer (with a blue dial), Omega seamaster, and a sleek somewhat minimalist watch (like a Junghaus).

Take a look!

I personally wouldn’t go Tudor btw- there is kind of a reputation of them copying Rolex too much. Your call though of course

Aren't Tudor and Rolex owned by the same guy?

Tudor and Omega are great choices and you won't get any weird looks. Honestly a basic Rolex is fine too (e.g. an all steel Datejust or Submariner). In general, most people don't know anything about watches and won't recognize what you have and for the people who do like watches, those are all classic pieces they'll appreciate.

Other options: Hamilton (solid quality for the price at

Looking at the used market like Chrono24 anywhere from 1900-2600ish. I've found that covers a good amount of Seamasters and Blackbays, but also some older date just/oyster perpetuals. Debating whether it's worth it to get a more used & older Rolex, or a much newer Omega or Tudor.

What watch aesthetically do you like the most? I could never get behind those snow flake hands with Tudor. I am a big fan of the Omega Speedmaster though.....feels like a lot of people have that watch though

Question for watch lovers - can you tell when a watch is cheap? There are stylish ones that look high end (similar to Omegas/Junghans), but cost like 100-200 bucks. What are your opinions on them?

I would agree with the above^. Even if you're not into watches, if you go for a more reputable company over a fashion watch, it will last longer, be higher quality, and people who are into watches will respect it more. Also know most of the DW, MVMT brands use Alibaba parts and you could get the same things from China for like 10 bucks. The guys selling them are great at marketing, but they're not making quality watches. A Seiko at the same price will last you forever.

saw this and was wondering - how are Apple watches viewed in banking? seems like everyone wears them in college and don’t know if it’s worth switching to more expensive less useful watches for work.

Get a Seiko Presage (also known as Cocktail Time)

Cons: - You´ll have to explain that akshually Seiko is a very good manufacturer Pros: - $450-600 retail price - impeccable finish (better than some Rolex watches) - absolutely stunning dials - no seriously, that quality - THE most respected brand in the lower-to-middle class, punches waayyyyyyy above it´s height
