Junior Semester Abroad - Need Help Choosing the Right University
I am a rising junior at a target school planning for my spring semester abroad and have narrowed my choices down to the following:
-Copenhagen Business School, Copenhagen Denmark;
-WHU-Otto Beisheim School of Management, Vallendar, Germany;
-Bocconi University, Milan, Italy;
-Manchester Business School, Manchester, United Kingdom;
-Center for European Studies, University of Maastricht, Maastricht, Netherlands;
-Rotterdam School of Management, Rotterdam, Netherlands;
- University of Economics, Prague, Czech Republic
-Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China
I was hoping someone could explain whether my selection could have much of an impact in making connections or furthering my career in some way. If so, could you please enlighten me on the reputation of these schools and also any benefits in terms of how it could potentially affect my career in IB, and list in order by which you recommend them.
Thanks a ton
Edit: all classes i would take are taught in english at each school, so language is not a problem, nor are class requirements.
If you're choosing your study abroad location based on its value to your future career, you're doing it way wrong
I would say pick the school based on the language. If you know Cantonese, do the one in Hong Kong, Italian, the one in Italy, German, the one in Germany. Dutch might be the best, because Dutch people know so many languages (English, German, French). And if you know just English, I would do the one in Manchester.
Of the schools listed, Bocconi is by far the best one. Certainly one of the top universities in Europe. However, I wouldn't make my decision based on the prestige/rigor of the university. In fact, I would suggest studying at a less rigorous school since study abroad is about traveling and enjoying your time abroad, rather than sitting in the library everyday.
I would avoid Prague since they don't speak a lick of English in the Czech Republic. If you don't speak Italian or German, I'm not sure you would want to be in Italy in Germany. I don't think you would have much of a language barrier in Netherlands or Denmark (I've been to both countries and the people there spoke English fairly fluently). Don't know much about Hong Kong but most accounts indicate that they speak English well.
The real question here is how long does it take to get to Amsterdam from Maastricht?
Don't do Maastricht, almost no community at the school. Also VERY small
I would go with Rotterdam!
Small correction, I would say that WHU is right up there with Bocconi. Plus, with Frankfurt a few km away...
Screw that. Make sure to go to a program where grades are taken pass/fail so you can enjoy the semester and not stress about class. Take fun classes where you walk around and see the city.
Also, I highly suggest Prague...its such a fun city and the cost of living is dirt cheap. You will STARVE in Copenhagen or the UK; in Prague, you can have a sit-down dinner for $7 compared to $20-25 in other cities. My friends in London were cooking 4x a week while I was paying for $1 pints at a decent restaurant. Girls are gorgeous and bars/clubs were amazing.
