Keyboards
Starting work tomorrow... my keyboard never shipped and my job is allowing me to get one and they will reimburse me. Does anyone have any recommendations on good keyboards for excel/general IB use? I know it doesn’t really matter but if I can get a better one than what they would send me I might as well.
What's your budget? If you have $100 then I would highly recommend a full sized mechanical keyboard with 10-key (the numpad at the right) to input #'s.
Technically no budget I guess... They said they’re going to reimburse me but I don’t want to send my boss a massive bill for a keyboard
Good advice for a righty. A lefty may prefer a 10-keyless and a separate numpad to place on the left side.
SB I hadn't considered that sinister perspective! A good keyboard can have a pass-through USB port which can plug in a 10-key.
I highly recommend this one. Used it as an intern in IB, and have used it ever since. I have used much nicer keyboards, and have a $130 one sitting right next to it, but I think this is the perfect keyboard. Another option would be the high end ergonomic ones. I bought one for my brother who is a developer, and he loves it.
What's the appeal of a wireless keyboard?
Seems just like another nuisance having to change the batteries for it
My thoughts as well. Your cubemates can also play games on you by stealing the batteries. (we were a naughty bunch at my last job) They did a hardware upgrade and offered us wireless keyboards and mice. I passed on that offer in an instant. I've got a lefty ergo mouse with reversed buttons. It's entertaining watching people try to use it and fail. I actually keep a spare $5 mouse in my desk for when IT needs to work on my PC.
If you can, get a keyboard with Topre switches. They’re expensive but feel like nothing else (I’ve had cherry switches but the Topres are insane).
I hate mechanical keyboards because of how loud they are and I get self conscious. I used the one below during my internship and then bought one for myself when I started FT. It comes keyboard only so you'd need to buy the $20 mouse separate.

Is a Bluetooth mouse compatible with a Bluetooth keyboard or must the mouse plug directly into the computer? Thanks
