Lateral from MM to EB after 9 months
I'll be joining a MM Bank in London (ING, MUFG) and before that I'm going to do a graduate internship at an EB (Centerview, Lazard) which could convert to a FT position (IN SUMMER 2021).
The internship and the start of my analyst stint aren't going to collide.
Well after posting my incoming FT position on LinkedIn (I know, I learned my lesson today) 2 bankers of that EB called me out of the blue and asked me if I still want to do the internship and if so, would I be even be interesting in starting with them. I told them yes, and if I get a ft position from their firm (EB) I would just resign at the MM bank. One associate seemed pleased and asked me about the notice period at the MM.
The other associate told me to really think about it, especially since the MM is my first job out of school. He also told me, he doesn't believe that I was honest to the MM Bank about potentially moving to the EB.
The call ended with them telling me, that I should think about the internship, if I really want to do it and if I would be ok, working at the MM bank when I know I will switch after 9 months to the EB.
What's your opinion about this?
I’ve seen some leave in 6 months to go from MM -> EB but it absolutely would destroy any connection/reference you have from the Mm bank.
Would you still do it? E.g. from MUFG to Lazard?
Just don't post anymore incoming shit on LinkedIn, I always advised against posting stuff on there even if you are joining 1 bank only, but doing something like this when you are in such an odd situation was just flat out dumb, especially if you have these bankers on LinkedIn.
More seriously let things settle and say that the MM is just something to keep you busy before you start as you need to surport your family or something.
Mainly did it for the flex, I know it was dumb. And yeah, the internship isn't until summer and I hope things will calm down until then. After talking to the associates, the MM firm seems way more chill than the EB.
Flex what bro? Put your SA at your EB>>>>>>>>>FT at ING/MUFG to flex lol.
Seems like an icarus type move. Firms hire for FT conversion and you starting full time after your internship somewhere else makes it extremely hard for anyone to bat for you come FT offers, you better absolutely crush your internship (now that the cat is out of the bag).
Worst case scenario the MM finds out via grapevine and rescinds your offer...this stuff has happened, just search on this forum for an infamous thread of a VP calling a friend at another firm.
Best case it works out, you work at the MM - leave after 6 months unscathed...worst case you end up with nothing from either.
Lesson to learn here? Don’t fly close to the sun for sake of doing so, getting an EB offer means you’re bright you must’ve known the possible backlash of posting that LinkedIn update.
It's just super weird back when I was applying for SA, last year I struggled quite a lot. Now I'm getting invited to a bunch of firms after I already signed FT somewhere else
