Aug-Sept. 1st year gets their bonus then bolts a few weeks after.
I'm actually interviewing right now at a BB for a lateral hire (2nd yr Analyst). A lateral BB recruiter recently told me they can be hiring at any time - just depends on the need of a particular group (although she could have just been feeding me shit - who knows). Would be curious to know what other people think
If hypotethically you were to lateral into a new group after 6-9 months, would it really look bad for buyside recruiting? Ive heard both arguments but curious to hear your guys' opinions and input. If one were to switch from lets say a product group to a coverage/LevFin(yes, technically product) after 6-9 months.
I feel like it shows drive/ambition to get to where you want to be.
Seen you ask this more than once - as you said, you're going to get both answers. Speak to any mentors you may have, especially if you know any on the buyside - you're going to have to make your own decision because of the ambiguity people offer. Do you like your ECM role or would you prefer to do LevFin? Sounds like you want to move - so move and find a PE shop that doesn't mind you moved.

You can try to time with bonus cycles but it's a fairly random process. Happens at all times of year.
Stub bonus and then annualized in jan/Feb. Otherwise calendar from your start date

I'm starting as a first year analyst in a few weeks with a Capital Markets Group and I already know that I want to lateral to a coverage group. When is the ideal schedule for making this move? I know I got to wait for around six months, and it would be preferable to do it after I receive my bonus for the year (when is that?).

I would wait for your stub.
Bonus time depends on the bank. For example, Wells Fargo does bonuses in Feb. They are probably the only bank that pays bonuses in Feb.
Interested
Most of the i-banks do not stub analysts and will pay you a full first-year bonus next summer. Some banks have been trying to push back the bonuses as a way to stem analyst attrition, although this doesn't work well. On average, 2011 analyst bonuses came out between late-July and mid-August.
If you are looking externally, then the right time to start looking is probably in the beginning of 2013 (when many banks will review headcount) and at the end of summer after bonuses are paid (and a bunch of analysts quit).
If you are considering an internal move, you will have to wait out your two years in capital markets, get a third year offer, and ask to do your third year in coverage.

As a first year analyst in risk at a BB, when would be the best time to reach out and apply for next summers IBD analyst program? My current manager will help along the way and says not to try until Jan-Feb but I feel that all the spots will be full by then. He also doesnt want my staffer to find out that i'm looking into the other group, so I shouldnt be actively talking about it to the IBD managers that I work with every day. Any thoughts?

I'm only 2 months into Corporate Banking
if you're looking to move within your firm things are obviously going to be trickier because you'll likely need approval from your current group/group head/whatever
if you're moving to a new firm, though, i'd say to wait until you've been in your role 6 months before you start hardcore pursuing other opportunities - makes you seem like you gave it a real chance and didn't just quit right away; also let's you spin the experience in IB interviews to say 'i've gained skills A B and C in my current role' - this is more believable after 6 months than after 2 months.

Bonus season for analysts at most banks is in the summer, not at the end of each calendar year (as it is for associates and above). As your intuition suggests, most of the laterals I worked with came on in late summer/fall.
For BB? Last summer was quite slow, no openings at all.
I know people who have gotten their bonus at year end. Also, I have seen an increasing number of HH reaching out to me recently.

So I'm interested in potentially lateraling to a pre-MBA spot at MBB or maybe Deloitte S&O if possible. I'm currently in a Big4 TAS group after spending a couple years in Big4 audit racking up experience to later MBA. I'm in NYC for the next 2.5 years due to the wife's graduate program, so I'm thinking I might as well see if I can at least get some strategy consulting experience if I'm going to be here anyway and the goal is bschool (want to transition into product/project mgmt).
Any advice on specific timing or how to go about the process? I've already taken my GMAT and locked down a 760. Undergrad was non-target state school 3.4 GPA with a masters in accounting at the same school 3.5. I have a CPA license if that matters for anything (I'm assuming not).

I have a Big 4 TAS experience for a couple of years and graduated from a non-target school. I got invited for MBB interviews through networking. So network, network and network.

I have the opportunity to make a move from a regional M&A boutique to a decent size MM IBD. The only issue, I am about three months away from my bonus. My question is: Is it worth making the move now before the bonus or should I wait until after? Also, if I make the move, should I bring up the fact that I would be leaving a pretty substantial chunk of cash on the table if I were to accept the offer?

I'm far from an expert, but it would seem like starting the process now would be beneficial. Even if they don't fully replicate what you are losing, I think most banks pay a signing bonus to laterals to offset the bonus. If you ultimately decide to wait, you should at least have a head start on the spring shell game.
