Advice needed: Lateral out of a niche group
Currently a second-year analyst in a top but niche BB group (think FIG, RE, Energy). Graduated top of my class from a strong target in 2020. While the group has steller buy-side placement, I found myself not that interested in the sector and want to lateral to industrials/consumer groups at different banks. Any advice on how to proceed? Should I start cold emailing alumni at other banks? How to keep track of opening lateral IB analyst spots?

Do you have good relationships to move internally, if you're not dead set on leaving anyway? If so, I would reach out and say you want to make the switch - same level of seriousness you would use in networking externally.
If not, start emailing relationships and alumni. When you have these conversations, be able to clearly describe how the work you've done easily translates into the work you want to do. Frame it so it's not a risk for them at all.
Got it. Thanks man
