Lateraling and losing a year?

I know it is normal for people to lose a year especially at analyst level. But what about compensation? Do you accept the same pay as one year below you? (If you are second year, you start as a first year and get paid like a first year. Is there a world where you get paid as a second year for those two years?)

I had an offer in my same bank. I was able to negotiate up a bit. One possibility is putting you on the higher pay ladder. The other would be to put you at the higher level during the year you lateral, but then keep you there the next year (no pay increase) while the rest of the class catches up
