Law/Biz dual: Finance opportunities for when I'm not in my second-to-last year of studies?

Not a JD/MBA, but I'm starting year 4/6 of an accelerated dual program where I'll graduate with an undergrad business degree and a JD. The important part is that I'm not graduating until 2023, which makes it impossible for me to accept a full-time offer at the end of 2021 summer. My business program places very well in IB & consulting in Canada (and even NYC to a lesser extent), my law school is relatively unremarkable. Long-term, my dream is to work in M&A advisory in a senior management position whether that be at a law firm (most likely) or IB

My question: What can I do to get some finance industry experience from a brand name employer this summer? Worked at a Real estate startup previously, but I would love to get a summer of IB or other finance under my belt, but the fact that I'm not graduating in the next two years will probably deter recruiters of traditional summer analyst programs, right? If so, what other internship opportunities in finance are there?

Options I'm considering:

  • Finance summer internship at a securities regulator (IIROC, OSC): This seems like the most realistic right now, and would be pretty relevant

  • An IB summer associate/analyst program: Seem like a real shot in the dark. I've heard legal knowledge can be beneficial for Lev Fin, Distressed Debt, but do any analyst program even give you exposure to that at Big5/ BBs? Would my chances of getting a placement be better at a boutique?

-  A non-IB summer analyst/associate at IB: Not really finance experience but I know a lot of BBs have legal/compliance opportunities for their New York offices (are there any in Toronto?). I'm thinking it would be worth it to get some legal experience plus have a brand name for the resume

Is there anything else out there I'm missing that could be worth exploring? Any JD/MBAs out there have similar experiences they could share?

TLDR: Biz/Law dual not graduating until year after next. Is it possible for me to get an IB summer analyst placement? If not, what other finance summer opportunities are out there?
